Consultant Geriatrician with Interest in Frailty

The post holder will work across Geriatric Medicine within a team comprising of 12 Consultants.
This is an exciting time to join an excellent team to further develop frail elderly care services at University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust. These are permanent posts with an opportunity for sub‑specialty work based on the interest of the candidates appointed.
You will be expected to work with other members of the Elderly Care Team, to provide first‑class clinical care and will be involved in the further development and provision of services. The Department is further enhancing its presence in the Emergency Department, providing in‑reach to the ED as well as Geriatrician support to the Frailty SDEC service and Frailty Short Stay. Working as part of the Frailty SDEC team you will work with a team of experienced Frailty Advanced Nurse / Care Practitioners and therapists, which has proven to be successful in reducing acute hospital admissions. The Department provides excellent ortho‑geriatrics and major trauma services and more recently has developed surgical in‑reach and Frailty PreAMS service. UHNM also has developed partnership services with the community Trust and has developed an Acute Care at Home Service, including a Virtual Ward. These services are provided jointly by Geriatricians and Acute Physicians.
Main duties of the job
Provision of cover to your base acute elderly care ward in conjunction with another Geriatrician, attendance at daily board rounds.
RSUH site – cover for FEAU as per rota. 1:8, 8‑5 and 1:8 weekends, 9‑3pm and bank holidays, 1:8, 9‑3 pm.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to take part in General Medical admissions and take part in covering medical Short Stay Unit over the weekend. The exact details of the frequency of the rota can be discussed with applicants.
Participate in the development of the Elderly Care protocols and guidelines and take lead / contribute to the development of services.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
Take an appropriate share of responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the speciality, to include appraisal.
Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit. This will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
Ensure own practice is up‑to‑date. This will involve taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system.

Person Specification
Clinical Experience & Training
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Geriatric Medicine and GIM
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within the specialty
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients
- Interest / experience in front door frailty

Academic Achievements & Publications
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.

Qualifications
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatric Medicine and GIM, either: a) Certificate of Completion of Training within 6 months of the interview date or b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration
- MRCP or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- Higher degree, eg MSc/MD or degree or diploma in medical education
