Overview

Senior DevOps Engineer to help lead the Internal Developer Portal, accelerating delivery for thousands of engineers by providing a unified platform for building, deploying, and operating services. The role focuses on designing and championing a platform that offers service ownership documentation, tooling, and operational insights, enabling self-service, faster deployments, quicker recovery, and improved collaboration. The position requires leadership to set standards, shape best practices, and align teams toward a modern, scalable engineering approach. The candidate should be passionate about platform engineering, internal developer platforms (IDPs), and modern DevOps practices with hands-on experience designing and operating tools such as Backstage, Port, or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and evolution of our internal developer platform to enable teams to build, deploy, and operate software efficiently through self-service capabilities, standardized workflows, and automation-first practices.
  • Bridge platform capabilities with developer needs, ensuring the portal remains aligned with the organisation’s goals and evolves with it.
  • Develop and maintain tools, templates, and integrations surfaced through the internal developer portal to support delivery teams in consistent service provision.
  • Promote engineering ownership and maintain the integrity and maintainability of services across the organisation.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge sharing across engineers and the wider community, fostering an inclusive environment for contributing to tooling, standards, and platform capabilities.
  • Collaborate with product-focused teams to gather requirements, evaluate tools, implement or update solutions, provision environments, and assist with operational issues.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Significant experience in designing, implementing, and managing an internal developer portal (e.g., Backstage, Port) that delivers software catalogs, self-service capabilities, and standardized workflows at scale.
  • Proven experience in writing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code and Configuration as Code.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux/Windows in support and/or development environments, including scripting languages.
  • Extensive experience in a DevOps environment with Continuous Integration and Deployment, agile methodologies, and modern delivery practices.
  • Strong ability to lead, coach, and develop engineers across multi-disciplinary, agile teams.
  • Experience developing and operating CI/CD pipelines and DevOps toolchains with a focus on automation.
  • Ability to operate across the organisation to drive mindset changes toward engineering ownership and reliable service delivery.
