Overview
The payments service team are the heart of Tesco Technology, serving 28 million+ shoppers in the UK and abroad. We deliver HTTP services that reliably manage payments at global scale, 24 hours a day every day. We provide capabilities that detect and prevent fraud and build upon innovative technologies to reduce loss. 100M+ transactions and billions of events per day, a billion pounds every week. At the core of our operation are the APIs that handle a variety of payment methods including cash, card and gift card across stores, at our fuel stations and online. We also support wallet behaviours, repeat payments, refunds and identity checks.
Role
As a Senior Software Developer at Tesco, you are responsible for the entire development and support process for a software programme. Your applications make previously sophisticated tasks simple with the impact ranging from saving time, effort or money to re-defining normal. The role focuses on day-to-day code writing however, you’ll also get to lead on design and architecture as well as help mentor and develop those around you in the team. If you like to work on high-impact business-critical systems then this could be the team for you!
Tech Stack and Engineering Culture
The stack includes .NET/C#, Java, Cassandra, Docker, HAProxy, Azure DevOps, Postgres. TDD and a ‘you build it, you support it’ DevOps approach are key parts of our engineering culture. Automation is a key focus; our scale and workloads require us to continuously improve our approaches to testing and deployment. You will be responsible for contributing to scalable frontend systems using .Net and related tools, translating requirements into tasks and code, and producing test-driven features.
Responsibilities
- Use your in-depth knowledge of .Net and the tool ecosystem to develop and implement scalable frontend systems.
- Translate requirements into tasks and code.
- Produce test-driven features and demonstrate familiarity with the TDD cycle.
- Apply understanding of cohesion and the SOLID principles to build well-structured, maintainable software.
- Work effectively with product stakeholders to communicate and translate needs into product improvements.
- Lead group discussions on system design and work with Product Managers to drive value.
- Support production systems, resolve incidents, and learn from them.
- Share knowledge with the wider engineering community; mentor and develop others around you.
- Produce proof of concepts to evaluate new tools.
Qualifications
- Experience using .Net/C# with an eagerness to take on new technologies.
- Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).
- Experience of working in agile environments and TDD.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience with Ecommerce payment systems is a nice-to-have but not crucial.
