Staff Nurse (Inpatient Mental Health)
This role is offered on a fixed term/secondment basis for 12 months.

Kingsholm Ward is an open 15-bed male acute inpatient ward for men experiencing mental health difficulties, either informally or under MHA detention. The role involves direct clinical care including medication administration, rapport building, care planning and assessment of mental state, within a therapeutic and collaborative environment that supports learning, development and compassionate care. You would be part of a diverse team and contribute to meaningful change and recovery.
Main duties of the job
In this role, you will provide comprehensive care to service users experiencing acute mental health issues. Your responsibilities will include administering medications, developing individualised care plans, and working closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic patient care. Strong communication skills, a compassionate approach, and a commitment to improving patient outcomes are essential.
- Functioning as Named Nurse within a multi-disciplinary team, to a defined patient group
- Undertaking the nursing process regarding assessment of care needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care
- Carrying out safety assessments, contributing to related management planning in consultation with the multi-disciplinary team in compliance with policy and procedures
- Carrying out all relevant forms of nursing care pertinent to the individual needs of people within the defined patient group
- Identifying and responding to the health promotion needs of patients focusing on improving mental well-being and physical health
- Identifying and responding to the needs of patients which might be related to vulnerability, gender health, domestic abuse, child protection and/or self harm
- Developing therapeutic relationships with patients and carers, ensuring that care needs are identified and met within a participative framework, and working with interpreter services to aid effective communication
- Working within agreed competency-based parameters to undertake evidence-based psychological therapies/psychological approaches to care with individuals and/or group settings where required
- Working in partnership with patients and carers using values-based practice to deliver person-centred care, promoting mental well-being and relapse prevention
- Ensuring professional practice (and that of others to whom duties have been delegated) adheres to the NMC Code of Conduct
- Maintaining a safe clinical environment and infection prevention/control in line with policies and standards
- Adhering to policies when assisting people with finances and belongings
- Administering prescribed medications/treatments in line with policy; monitoring effectiveness and managing side effects
- Acting as a role model for junior staff, fostering trust and confidence in the service
- Assuming responsibility for the ward/department in the absence of senior staff to ensure safe, effective, person-centred care
- Participating in regular clinical supervision/reflective practice
- Monitoring the practice of others and providing support and development where required
- Supporting and supervising learners and contributing to the practice learning environment
- Identifying and addressing own development needs to ensure safe, effective, person-centred care
- Liaison with statutory and non-statutory agencies involved in patient care across hospital and community settings
- Maintaining accurate records reflecting contemporaneous safety assessment/management and evidence-based nursing care
- Raising and escalating concerns through established reporting mechanisms to maintain safe, effective care
- Responding to emergencies, including medical emergencies and safe restraint; competent in breakaway techniques
- Supporting other wards in times of high acuity
Experience, knowledge, attitude and character
- NMC pin or due to qualify within 3 months
- Knowledge of the inpatient setting and/or experience on an acute ward
- Experience in mental health and a passion for the field
- Positive attitude to teamwork
- Ability to work rotational shift pattern with flexible working if appropriate
- Ability to complete essential role training
- Computer literate with good record keeping
- RMN or RMLD speciality
- Ability to drive with a current driving licence
- Evidence of or plans towards further professional development
- Understanding of safety assessments and personalised care planning
- Understanding of teams and services relevant to the environment
Professionalism and positive attitude
- Understanding of the NMC Code of Conduct and ability to apply it in practice
- Demonstrated experience of upholding professional standards in a work setting
