The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust is seeking Band 5 Staff Nurses for the Emergency Department (ED) and Acute Medicine. Closing date: 22 July 2026.
We are seeking both experienced and newly qualified nurses who demonstrate strong communication, leadership potential and a passion for developing their emergency and acute clinical practice. Main duties
- Practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
- Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is provided to patients in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
- Carry out clinical practice within designated clinical areas, delivering high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, planning, implementation and interventions from admission to discharge.
- Delegate care to unregistered carers while retaining responsibility for care.
- Be flexible and willing to be redeployed to an area within your clinical expertise to provide support and assist with safe staffing across the Trust when required.
- Ensure all patients have a safe and effective discharge plan and collaborate with the integrated discharge team for complex discharges.
- Undertake the Shift Co-ordinator (nurse in charge) role on a shift basis once competency is achieved.
- Organise and deliver individualized patient care, ensuring physical, social and psychological needs are met.
- Liaise with a multidisciplinary team and other agencies to provide collaborative care.
- Recognise the significance of observations, use them to develop nursing assessments and plans of care.
- Recognise signs of deterioration and act without delay.

- Be flexible and willing to be redeployed to an area within your sphere of practice to provide clinical support and assist with facilitating safe staffing across the Trust when required.
- Ensure that all patients have a safe and effective discharge plan and collaborate with the integrated discharge team for complex discharges.
- Undertake the Shift Co-ordinator (nurse in charge) role on a shift basis once competency is achieved; organise and deliver individualized patient care addressing physical, social and psychological needs.
- Liaise with a multidisciplinary team to provide care in collaboration with carers, health care professionals and other agencies.
- Recognise the significance of observations and use them to develop nursing assessments and plans of care.
- Recognise signs of deterioration and take action without delay.
- Manage clinical emergencies, staying up to date with hospital life support.
- Administer prescribed medications correctly, including controlled drugs, blood transfusions and blood products. Include essential care such as pressure ulcer prevention, fall prevention, and health promotion (e.g., smoking cessation, healthy eating).
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Current NMC registration
- Evidence of recent Continuous Professional Development
- Nursing degree or working towards a nursing degree
- Mentorship qualifications
Experience
- Knowledge of escalation and recognition of deterioration in patients
- Flexibility to work in other areas of PAHT as required to ensure safe patient care
- Experience in an acute care setting
- Experience in general surgical settings
- Experience in urological care settings
