The Role
This role is part of Saab Seaeye in Fareham. You will take responsibility for the full‑lifecycle design and development of bespoke power conversion and transmission solutions aligned with the company’s business needs through innovation, creativity and professionalism. As Lead Engineer you will act as Technical Authority for concurrent power projects, from in‑house designs to outsourced specifications and management.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement and deliver power conversion and transmission solutions for products, spanning large‑scale power conversion, efficient cabled transmission designs, motor drives and low‑voltage converters.
- Work with voltages from 24V to 5000V and powers from 500W to 250kW.
- Lead small multi‑disciplinary teams where required and coordinate project activities with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Maintain a product‑focussed mindset, taking a cross‑discipline view to deliver the most appropriate solution while meeting size, weight and efficiency demands.
- Address non‑conventional design challenges to meet performance requirements in power systems.
Qualifications and Skills
- Essential
- Significant experience in power electronics with full lifecycle involvement (concept to tested solution).
- Self‑starter with proactive mindset and ability to lead.
- Strong theoretical knowledge with proven hands‑on experience.
- Knowledge of power transmission (AC and DC) applied to multi‑km cabling.
- Knowledge of DC converter topologies: Buck, Boost, Flyback, LLC, Full‑Bridge.
- Knowledge of AC converter techniques: single‑phase/multi‑phase, power factor correction.
- Experience designing power converter products (AC‑DC, DC‑DC, DC‑AC inverters).
- Experience with power switching devices: MOSFET, IGBT, SiCFET, GaNFET and drive circuitry.
- Experience with voltages up to 5kV and multi‑kW powers.
- Experience in designing or specifying custom transformers and magnetic components.
- Experience using modelling and simulation tools; experience in both digital and analogue design.
- Experience in filter design and implementation.
- Experience designing/specifying control systems for power conversion.
- Knowledge of thermal management and design‑for‑compliance.
- Experience developing requirements, specifications and test procedures.
- Experience of system level integration and testing.
- Desirable
- High voltage experience up to 5kV.
- Thermal modelling experience.
- Motor design principles and control techniques.
- Embedded‑C programming.
