Our Waste Services Team delivers essential services our residents rely on daily, including the collection, treatment, recycling and safe disposal of household waste. The team provides domestic, recycling and garden waste collections to more than 126,000 households across the city, completing over 9 million collections each year and processing more than 100,000 tonnes of waste annually. Role: Supervising Team Leader

Coventry City Council are looking for proactive and motivated Supervising Team Leaders to join our Street Pride and Fleet Management service. This is a key operational role where you will lead and supervise frontline teams to deliver high-quality waste and environmental services across the city. Working closely with the Waste & Recycling Manager, you will ensure services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with customer expectations and service standards.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day deployment of staff, vehicles and resources; ensure operational priorities are met and services are completed on time and within budget.
  • Monitor performance, maintain high health and safety standards, support employee development, and manage attendance, wellbeing and conduct matters.
  • Drive continuous improvement, promote a customer-focused culture, and participate in service planning and innovation.
  • Deputise for the Operational Manager when required.
  • Work from Whitley Depot, with potential duties at other locations across the city; participate in a rota covering 1 in 7 Saturdays.
  • Be willing to obtain an HGV Class 2 licence within 12 months if not already held.

Requirements

  • Experience of supervising operational teams in fast-paced environments; strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate, support and develop staff while maintaining high standards of performance and customer service.
  • Experience in managing competing priorities, solving problems, and making decisions to ensure service continuity.
  • Experience supervising teams, planning and organising workloads; customer-focused operational service delivery.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to monitor performance and manage resources to meet targets.
  • Experience handling employee matters such as attendance, performance and conduct issues.
  • Good ICT skills (Microsoft Office and other operational systems) and knowledge of health and safety responsibilities.
  • Understanding of effective people management practices, including recruitment, training and development.
  • A full current driving licence.
  • Formal supervisory training or relevant qualifications and experience in waste management, environmental services, fleet operations, or similar frontline service environments are desirable.
