Position
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Highly Specialist Clinical Physiologist based at University Hospital Ayr. This post is offered on a permanent basis, 36 hours per week (full‑time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours from 1 April 2026). A UK driving licence is essential for this role.
What You Will Do
The role involves independently scanning and reporting echocardiograms, including saline bubble and LV contrast echocardiograms. Candidates should be competent in stress echocardiography (pharmacological and physiological eBike), capture and optimisation of transesophageal echocardiography images, and have basic brady device follow‑up knowledge. Excellent communication skills and supervisory skills are required to manage junior staff and work closely with cardiology and specialist nurse colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Scan and report echocardiograms independently.
- Perform diagnostic cardiac catheterisation and oversee brady device follow‑up.
- Conduct stress echocardiography (pharmacological and eBike).
- Capture and optimise transesophageal echocardiography images.
- Communicate findings and supervise junior staff.
- Collaborate with cardiology and specialist nurse colleagues.
Knowledge, Training and Experience
The post holder will be based at Ayr Hospital and may work occasionally at Crosshouse hospitals.
Qualifications and Experience
- BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
- Full British Society of Echocardiography accreditation.
- Clinical experience of at least 6 months scanning and reporting post accreditation.
- Proficiency in invasive and non‑invasive cardiology investigations, including diagnostic cardiac catheterisation.
- Basic brady device follow‑up knowledge.
- Experience with cardiac catheterisation and stress echocardiography.
- Registered with AHCS considered an advantage.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran may offer visa sponsorship for certain roles, provided the post meets the minimum salary threshold and other required criteria.
