We are looking for a full-time band 3 clinical support worker to support and work closely with registered practitioners and anaesthetists, contributing to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the theatre department and phlebotomy service while maintaining patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality.
You will be expected to complete the care certificate if not already completed and to demonstrate maintained attitudes, behaviours and knowledge required to care for patients, via self-assessment and observations. You will also complete and maintain any occupationally relevant proficiencies.
Main duties of the job
- Undertake a range of delegated and specific clinical skills for patients that demonstrate an enhanced level of competency or technical expertise (including care in the anaesthetic room and related procedures).
- Prepare patients, families/carers and the environment for clinical activities, support and reassure patients and families/carers, and prepare equipment as necessary.
- Monitor closely patients following a clinical activity to ensure safety, comfort and wellbeing.
- Contribute to, understand and report identified patient risk assessments.
- Report and raise concerns about poor practice, attitude or behaviour of any healthcare professional through appropriate channels.
- Undertake patient transfer and escort duties between departments as per policy.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families/carers, recognising the need for alternative communication methods where required; arrange access to information, support and other services as needed.
- Greet patients and visitors with courtesy and respect, recognising age-specific needs; demonstrate sensitivity and empathy.
- Answer telephone calls and bleeps, relay messages accurately to colleagues and patients using SBARR where appropriate.
- Maintain professional boundaries and working relationships with patients and colleagues.

Job responsibilities
Patient Care
- Undertake a range of delegated and specific clinical skills for patients with documented plans of care, including preparation of patients, families/carers and the environment, and equipment preparation.
- Provide personal care for patients of all genders, support independence, maintain privacy and dignity, and assist with toileting needs as required.
- Assess and monitor skin integrity; report any changes promptly.
- Demonstrate clinical competence to undertake minor dressings and treatments as directed by the registered practitioner.
- Encourage patients and families/carers to participate in care and promote healthy living as part of the care plan.
- Assist patients to mobilise safely, considering developmental/physical needs and record in the care plan. Contribute to falls and moving and handling risk assessment.
- Support end-of-life care in accordance with spiritual and cultural needs; assist families/carers as appropriate.
- Recognise changes in patient condition and seek advice from a registered practitioner as required.
- Record observations using electronic systems and escalate concerns promptly; participate in initial patient needs assessment under supervision.
- Assist with nutrition and hydration needs, including special diets, supplements and enteral feeding; document intake accurately.
- Seek support after untoward incidents and escalate concerns regarding poor practice.
- Contribute to patient transfers and escort duties as per policy; assist colleagues during agitated or non-compliant situations and escalate accordingly.
- Obtain specimens as directed by the registered practitioner and ensure correct labelling and transport per policy.
- Demonstrate understanding of safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act/Deprivation of Liberties and seek guidance from the registered nurse as required.
Communication
- Communicate effectively with patients, families/carers and use alternative communication methods as needed; arrange access to information and support services.
- Greet patients and visitors with courtesy and respect; provide orientation and information as required.
- Respond to calls and messages using SBARR; maintain high standards of personal behaviour and professional communication with the MDT.
- Use paper and electronic systems to retrieve and record patient information in line with Trust standards; apply information governance and patient confidentiality principles.
- Obtain age-appropriate consent; escalate where consent is not given.
- Contribute to handovers and ward discussions; encourage junior staff to participate.
- Support families, carers and colleagues following bereavement or bad news; seek and acknowledge feedback; seek support after incidents as required.
- Escalate concerns about any health care professional through appropriate channels and maintain professional boundaries.
- Keep patients informed of delays and participate in handovers to ensure continuity of care.
- Contribute to team discussions, audits and project activities as appropriate.

Prepare healthcare records for appointments, manage workload and time effectively, contribute to ongoing assessment and planning of care, document care accurately and ensure countersignature by a registered practitioner. Participate in admission/discharge under supervision; work within a team environment and develop management skills. Maintain timeliness of shifts and breaks while performing clerical tasks as required.
