Overview
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking Healthcare Assistants. The closing date is 10 July 2026.
Main duties of the job
- Contributes to the work of the department by working under direct or indirect supervision of registered practitioners or assistant practitioners.
- Carry out delegated, repetitive, routine, and familiar tasks.
- Develop an awareness of normal parameters concerning patient wellbeing and report anything outside normal parameters to the registered professional.
- Plan and prioritise own and delegated work tasks and activities.
- Carry out routine elements of assessment to enhance the patient journey, following an initial assessment by a registered practitioner.
- Meet basic care needs of patients, including washing, dressing, and assistance with feeding.

You are required to bring qualification certificates, photographic identification, and a portfolio of evidence of skills and experience on the day of interview. Qualifications required include:
- GCSEs in English and Maths at Grades 3-1 (or D-G or Level 1 Functional/Key Skills). Please document this in your application and bring certificates to the interview.
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent direct care experience in a recognised healthcare environment. Please document qualifications and experience and bring certificates to the interview, with evidence in your portfolio.
Note: you will need to provide your qualifications/portfolio of evidence on the day of your interview.
- Experience of caring in a health care setting
- Ability to meet basic care needs of patients, including washing, dressing and assistance with feeding
- Ability to communicate with members of the public and health care providers
- Ability to work effectively under direct supervision, as part of the multi-disciplinary team
- Understanding of confidentiality
- Alignment to trust values and core behaviours
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the service and ability to work a full variety of shifts including days and nights
- Basic IT skills
All successful candidates will receive support before working in the clinical area, through the mandatory Healthcare Academy programme if you are new to the Trust.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend a face-to-face interview on Tuesday 21 July 2026 at Regent Point, Gosforth.

Qualifications & Education
- Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care or equivalent level qualification or equivalent relevant experience
- GCSEs in English and Maths at Grades 3-1 (or D-G or Level 1 Functional/Key Skills)
- GCSEs in English and Maths at Grades 9-4 (or A*-C or Level 2 Functional/Key Skills)
Knowledge & Experience
- Understanding of confidentiality
- Experience of caring in a health care setting
- An understanding of working in the NHS
Skills & Abilities
- Basic IT skills
- Ability to work effectively under direct supervision, as part of the multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to communicate with members of the public and health care providers

- Competent in physical skills e.g. recording ECGs, recording blood glucose etc
