Job Description:

Subcontract Welding & Quality Inspector

Are you a certified CSWIP 3.1 or PCN Level 2 Welding Inspector with a strong background in structural steel fabrication? Do you have an uncompromising eye for detail and the communication skills to manage subcontractor quality effectively?

We are looking for a skilled Subcontract Welding & Quality Inspector to join our growing business. In this role, you will play a critical part in overseeing the quality assurance, compliance, and workmanship of subcontracted structural steelwork for high-profile structural and infrastructure projects.

If you are looking for a long-term career opportunity with a successful business that values professional development, this is your next step.

The Role Purpose

Based between various subcontractor and project sites, you will ensure all fabricated steelwork, welding activities, coatings, and quality documentation strictly comply with engineering specifications, contractual requirements, and recognized industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspection & Quality Assurance: Carry out dimensional and visual weld inspections of fabricated components, ensuring compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, and ITPs (Inspection & Test Plans).
  • Welding Compliance: Monitor activities against approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications) and verify welder qualifications.
  • Material & Documentation Control: Review MTCs (Material Test Certificates), maintain accurate inspection reports, and manage the NCR (Non-Conformance Report) process from identification to close-out.
  • Coatings & Finishing: Inspect surface preparation, painting, and galvanizing processes against project specifications.
  • Supplier & Project Liaison: Coordinate third-party testing (NDT), support supplier quality audits, and liaise closely with project managers, subcontractors, and client representatives.

What We Are Looking For

Essential:

  • Certification: Minimum CSWIP 3.1 or PCN Level 2 Welding Inspector certification.
  • Background: Proven experience inspecting structural steel fabrication and welding (ideally coming from a practical fabricator/welder background).
  • Standards Knowledge: Strong understanding of EN 1090, ISO 3834, and ISO 9001.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings; experience with quality and fabrication software (e.g., StruMIS, GMIS) is a major plus.
  • Mobility: Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel between subcontractor and project sites.

Desirable:

  • Experience working on major infrastructure or large-scale structural steel projects.
  • Knowledge of coating inspection, galvanizing, or additional NDT qualifications.
  • Previous experience conducting supplier quality audits.

What’s on Offer?

  • Competitive salary (dependent on experience)
  • Health plan & Company pension scheme
  • Share Save scheme & Cycle to Work scheme
  • Sick pay & option to purchase additional annual leave
  • Ongoing professional development and industry training
  • The chance to work on high-profile, landmark structural projects
