Consultant Urologist – Specialist Interest in Reconstructive Surgery

Job Summary
The Department of Urology is seeking a new full‑time (10 PA) substantive Consultant for the Guy’s Urology Team in partnership with Lewisham and Greenwich Trust (LGT). The post will operate as part of the ‘Guy’s Urology with LGT’ initiative, with clinical sessions at both trusts, and a 1 in 8 on‑call rota at LGT working in tandem with the GSTT rota (Category A).
Main Duties of the Job
The post will carry out an average of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week, including One Stop clinics, specialist clinics and surgical sessions across both sites. The responsibilities include recruitment, job planning, shared governance, and the development of a robust and sustainable model for acute pathway care.
Responsibilities
Line Management / Accountability
- Immediate line management will be provided by the Urology Clinical Lead at Guys Urology.
- Appointed Clinical Director for Urology at LGT will provide local clinical leadership and ongoing management of the Urology service at LGT.
- Accountable to Matthew Bultitude, Clinical Director of Transplant, Renal and Urology (TR&U).
Provide High Quality Care to Patients
- Medical qualification, GMC specialist registration, and licence to practise.
- Maintain required competencies for the post.
- Prompt attendance at programmed activities.
- Engage patients in care decisions and respond to their views.
Research, Teaching and Training
- Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance translational research.
- Provide quality teaching to medical undergraduates and other health professionals.
- Act as educational supervisor and appraiser for training posts.
Performance Management
- Support high performance in clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management, and operational efficiency.
Medical Staff Management
- Ensure junior doctors’ hours comply with EWTD and New Deal.
- Manage leave and cover for junior staff, including on‑call commitments.
- Participate in recruitment and annual appraisal of all doctors in training and staff.
Governance
- Review clinical outcomes using benchmarking data, and advise the Clinical Director.
- Participate in audit, incident reporting, and analysis.
- Engage with PPI panels and ensure NICE requirements are implemented and monitored.
- Update clinical guidelines and protocols, and act as a role model for infection control.
Strategy and Business Planning
- Contribute to business planning and objective setting for the directorate and Trust.
- Represent the Trust at external networks as delegated by the Clinical Director.
Leadership and Team Working
- Demonstrate excellent leadership skills and collaborative working with multidisciplinary teams.
- Chair regular specialty meetings and resolve conflicts through negotiation.
- Adhere to leave guidelines and report absences.
Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration with entry on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT.
- FRCS (Urol) or equivalent.
- MD or PhD.
- Relevant courses matching the post.
Clinical Experience
- Ability to perform complex general urology procedures independently.
- High‑level fellowship training in reconstructive andrology surgery.
- Evidence of high‑level service development.
- Experience in genito‑urethral reconstructive procedures.
Clinical Skills
- Effective multidisciplinary teamwork.
Audit, Management and IT
- Clear understanding and track record of clinical governance, audit, and appropriate IT skills.
- Management course completed.
Research / Training
- Understanding of clinical research principles.
- Experience teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior staff.
- Original research and publications.
- Teaching qualification.
- National/international presentations.
