Job Description:

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of Anaesthesia.
  • Share with colleagues the responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the Anaesthetic department.
  • Teach and train junior staff and medical students where applicable.
  • Ensure active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • Participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
  • Engage in quality improvement, data analysis and information presentation, and service development.
  • Attend care group and directorate business, operational and governance meetings as appropriate.
  • Fulfil duties of the weekly timetable, including any out‑of‑hours responsibilities.
  • Deliver pre‑operative assessment and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) sessions.
  • Contribute to the development of digital peri‑operative medicine (POM) pathways.

Qualifications

  • Identity checks.
  • Professional registration and qualification checks.
  • Employment history and reference checks.
  • Work health assessments.
  • Criminal record check standards.
  • Right to work checks.
  • GMC registration.
  • GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) in Anaesthetics at time of interview.
  • FRCA or equivalent.
  • Perioperative medicine specialist interest area.
  • CPET competency.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a broad range of problems in Anaesthesia.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Experience in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance, and understanding how this improves the quality of care.
  • Experience in pre‑assessment to higher competency, Emergency CEPOD and trauma.
  • Professional management and leadership duty as floor anaesthetist.
  • Systems of Emergency Support and Acute Theatre Staff and Patient Scheduling post‑anaesthetic (Level 1.5 Care) experience.
  • Extensive transfer experience across all age ranges.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is a district general hospital and major trauma unit with over 30,000 anaesthetics and 4,000 births annually. The Trust operates 27 operating theatres and 18 critical care beds, and will soon expand with a new Women and Children’s extension, including obstetric and paediatric theatres.
