Overview

We are seeking a Band 5 Occupational Therapist to join the forensic services team at St Bernard’s Hospital in Ealing. The role focuses on men’s and women’s low and medium secure pathways, supporting service users on meaningful recovery journeys within a multidisciplinary team of Occupational Therapists, Assistants, Activity Coordinators and Recovery Support Workers.

Responsibilities

  • Manage an individual clinical caseload, delivering individual and group interventions aimed at improving independence and recovery.
  • Provide a range of interventions, including social skills, self‑care, life skills, transitions, cyber safety, leisure and vocational development.
  • Conduct assessment, case formulation, goal setting and therapeutic planning using the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdTMoCA).
  • Support service users through clear clinical pathways from acute care, through rehabilitation, to community reintegration.
  • Facilitate access to vocational and educational opportunities to build confidence, skills and employment prospects.
  • Work collaboratively with Allied Health Professionals and the wider team to provide integrated care.
  • Participate in continuous professional development (CPD) and contribute to service development and training of others.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience in a mental health or health/social care setting.

  • Involvement in research or clinical audit and familiarity with research methodology.
  • Knowledge of forensic care placement and understanding of how mental illness presents in this setting.
  • Proficiency in the OT process, models of practice, and use of standardised assessment tools.
  • Strong organisational ability and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with service users, carers and colleagues.
  • Evidence of independent OT assessment, treatment planning, intervention and evaluation.
  • Problem‑solving skills with clear and effective decision‑making.
  • Computer literacy and capability to prepare and present papers at study days and conferences.
  • Commitment to client‑centred, non‑discriminatory practice and willingness to work flexible hours when required.
  • Membership of a relevant Special Interest Group (e.g., RCOT SS Mental Health) is desirable.
  • Capable of self‑reflection, critical appraisal, and taking responsibility for ongoing professional development.
