Overview
Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Senior Healthcare Support Worker for the Outpatient’s Department. The department provides support for various clinics, including diagnostic tests, blood sampling, simple procedures and consultations, and related paperwork. The team includes 1 Band 7 Senior Sister, 1 Band 5 Registered Nurse and 3 full-time Band 3 Senior HCAs (including this role). The team works flexibly with a varied shift pattern to support clinics and the roll-out of the new Patient Record System, EPIC.

Main duties of the job
- Working clinically to ensure the safety and quality of the care given to designated patients, under the indirect supervision of a registered nurse/practitioner
- Undertaking clinical tasks competently and efficiently, including:
- Cannulation and Venepuncture
- Conducting ECGs
- Preparation of equipment for various clinics
- Decontamination of equipment within specific guidelines following procedures
- Provide support to patients as a chaperone during personal and invasive procedures
- Competently taking and interpreting vital signs on adults
- Able to make appropriate referrals to Adult and Child Safeguarding teams
- Supporting and working with colleagues during the shift
- Liaising with the wider MDT to maintain safety
- Helping to facilitate the development of the service as part of the wider team
- Participating in discussions and projects that will benefit the team, the patients and the ward as a whole
- Working under guidance and in conjunction with the senior nursing team and the Matron
- Following the Trust’s Policies and Protocols to ensure the safety of the department

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
- Recent experience as an HCA in a hospital setting
- Care Certificate
- Evidence of continued study
Knowledge and experience
- Confidence in own ability to manage your own workload
- Be able to evaluate care delivered and plan ahead
- Be able to identify a sick or deteriorating patient
- Have an understanding of how to undertake and monitor vital signs, escalating to nursing staff where indicated
- Understand principles of safeguarding and to be able to make appropriate referrals
Specific Skills
- Ability to work under pressure and flexibly
- Be competent in recording and understanding vital signs
- Be competent in performing ECGs
- Be able to undertake venepuncture and cannulation
