Healthcare Support Worker – Templer Ward

Templer Ward is a 30 bedded in‑patient ward within Newton Abbot Community Hospital. 20 beds provide care to specialist stroke and neuro rehabilitation patients following treatment in an acute hospital setting. The other 10 beds are for patients requiring general medical care and rehabilitation.

Joining our team on a permanent full‑time contract, you will work within a proactive multidisciplinary team to encourage patients to reach the maximum rehabilitation potential to enable safe discharge from hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide caring and compassionate care, working within a multi‑disciplinary team to deliver a high standard of individualised nursing care to patients.
  • Use excellent communication skills and work independently, prioritising workload to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
  • Ensure your actions support the care, protection and well‑being of individuals, maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Be flexible as this is a rotational post, including days, nights and weekend working.

Job responsibilities

  • Communication and working relationships – work as a member of the team.
  • Planning and organisation – recognise and respond to situations within the work area and report to the nurse in charge.
  • Undertake direct patient care, in support of, and under the delegation of the registered nurse, and document care given as required.
  • Assist with last offices and care of relatives/carers.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

  • NVQ3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • English & mathematics at GCSE grade A‑C (9‑4) or level 2 functional skills.
  • Care certificate.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Previous experience in a care environment or ability to demonstrate a caring nature/life experience.
  • Understands the need for strict confidentiality.
  • Working knowledge of complex care needs of some individuals/families including safeguarding children & adults, domestic abuse and mental health.

Specific Skills

  • Basic computer/keyboard skills.
  • Fine motor skills – for venepuncture, phlebotomy and other clinical tasks.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Record‑keeping competency in handwritten and electronic records.
  • Ability to manage stress in self and others.
  • Willingness to undertake new skills and training.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, reliability and punctuality.
