IRISi Oral health and Domestic Abuse (DA) programme – Advocate Educator

Full time: 37.5 hours per week

Fixed term: 12 months

Salary: £36,363 (NJC scale points 23–25)

Location: Remote with some travel to North Central London (including Barnet, Camden, Islington, Hackney and Haringey)

IRISi is looking for an experienced and passionate domestic abuse specialist to join an innovative programme addressing Oral health and domestic abuse (DA).

IRISi is a registered charity dedicated to improving the healthcare response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV). They bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and their evidence-based programmes provide specialist support for victims and survivors.

Funding from the West & North London ICB is enabling delivery of a dedicated Oral health and Domestic Abuse (DA) programme across the boroughs of Enfield, Camden, Islington, Hackney and Haringey; providing access to specialist DA training and consultancy for dental teams and a direct referral route for patients with experiences of DA. Advocacy is available for individuals within the dental teams too.

As the IRISi Advocate Educator, you will play a central role in shaping the programme as it develops. You will combine specialist advocacy for patients, training and consultancy for staff, and service development, helping to build safe pathways of support.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who understands both the complex realities of domestic abuse and the healthcare landscape, and who is motivated to help develop an innovative programme.

Aims of the position

The Advocate Educator will play a critical role in developing and delivering the IRISi Oral health and DA programme. The post holder will support dental teams in identifying, responding to, and supporting patients experiencing domestic abuse and will provide advocacy to patients and triage to appropriate services as necessary. The role therefore combines specialist advocacy, training, consultancy, and service development functions.

The post holder will:

  • Promote and embed the IRISi programme for Oral health and DA.
  • Adapt training materials and programme delivery.
  • Deliver high quality training, consultancy, and peer support to dental teams.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with practice champions.
  • Provide trauma-informed, needs-led advocacy, risk assessment and initial support to patients disclosing recent and non-recent domestic abuse.
  • Provide support to staff disclosing recent and non-recent domestic abuse.
