ArdinglyCourt GP Surgery is seeking a Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our friendlyteam.

Weare looking for someone who enjoys working in a busy environment and has a loveof patient care.

The candidate is required to have prior experience of workingin a GP practice in a HCA role in order to hit the ground running

(We do notwish to train a HCA who has not worked in GP surgery before).

Main duties of the job

Other elements youwill be expected to deliver (with training); blood pressure checks, NHS healthchecks, Urinalysis, restocking of rooms, diabetic foot assessments, ECGmeasurement, assisting with Infection Control processes and audits.

The post can be between30-37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday)

Timings can be flexibleideally would start at 8:30/9:00 (although hours could be adapted if still metsurgery needs).

Pay scale dependent on experience but in the range of £12.71 -£14.50 per hour.

In order to qualify for the top of the pay scale the candidatewould need to have previous experience in a GP HCA role and be able to carryout the majority of the job description on starting. (A minimum skill set wouldbe experience of delivering phlebotomy, BP checks and processing samples)

About us

We are a close knit team of approximately 21 staff (5 GPs,2 nurses, 2 HCAs) and a number of administrative support staff.

We seek to provide a high level of GP health services &serve approximately 6,500 patients.

Centrally located inKemptown we are walking distance from Brighton train station and the St JamesStreet bus stop.

Job responsibilities

MAIN PURPOSE

To assist the medical personnel with the care of patients. This will include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. The post will also include some administrative duties.

GENERAL

As part of the nursing team the HCA will be employed to undertake nursing and administrative duties as deemed suitable by the Partners. Full training will be given prior to any patient contact. The HCA will always work along side another member of the nursing team and there will always be a doctor available to refer to. The role involves the use of the computer and keyboard skills along with the ability to organise and prioritise a varied workload are necessary.

To maintain a safe and effective level of practice and to bring any deficits in training to the attention of the nurse manager so these can be addressed.

They will be required to act in a professional manner at all times and adhere to practice policies, protocols and guidelines.

1. Training

Training will initially be provided in house. Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal. Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the practice. Its the individuals responsibility to remain up to date with recent developments.

2. Accountability

Although accountable to the partners of the practice through the practice manager as an employee, they are ultimately responsible for their own practice and must ensure that limitations are always acknowledged. Full training will be provided for any clinical procedures.

3. Administration

All records need to be kept clearly and contemporaneously on the computer.

4. Meetings

It will be necessary to attend various Practice meetings as requested. The only reason for not attending will be annual, study or sick leave.

As well as the nursing team, the nursing assistant will work closely with reception staff and will be expected to communicate and liaise with the all other members of the Practice team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Nursing

  • BP monitoring
  • Urinalysis
  • ECG measurement
  • Weight monitoring
  • Chaperone patients as necessary
  • Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the Practice
  • Foot assessments
  • Health Promotion
  • Restocking/maintenance of equipment
  • Restocking of clinical areas and consulting rooms

2. Administration and professional responsibilities

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team

Ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes

Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded

Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice

Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports

Attend and participate in practice meetings as required

Restocking and maintenance of clinical areas and consulting rooms

To assist in seasonal and special projects as requested e.g. flu campaign

  • Cleaning and sterilisation of equipment and associated record keeping.
  • Ordering of pathology stores equipment

3. Any other delegated duties considered appropriate to the post

  • Support Infection Control processes

Person Specification

Experience

  • Personal specification:
  • Experience working in a GP surgery as a HCA
  • Confident utilising PCs for record keeping/ emails/ internal communications
  • Knowledge of confidentiality
  • High level of verbal and written English
  • Able to work in an inclusive and non-discriminatory way
  • Willing to learn new skills and undertake training to support role and personal development
  • Skills/ experience with regards to the job description
  • NVQ/ BTEC in Health and Social Care or similar
  • Knowledge of GP services working processes and workload
  • Knowledge of local health services and organisations
