Healthcare Support Worker

Our Healthcare Support Worker works as part of the nursing team, providing personal nursing care and clinical interventions to patients in the inpatient hospital care setting. They may contribute to assessment of care needs and delivery of planned care under delegation and direction of the Registered Nurse, including recording observations and documenting changes to the patient’s clinical condition. Practice is within the boundaries of their role and competence.
Main duties of the job
- Provide direct patient‑centred care in accordance with patient needs and Trust policies, including personal care, oral care, toileting and continence support, promoting independence.
- Establish and maintain good interpersonal skills, providing and receiving factual accurate information and overcoming communication barriers using visual prompts, reassurance, empathy and persuasion.
- Undertake training to perform high‑quality clinical interventions, such as clinical observations, blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, venepuncture, urinary catheter removal, peripheral cannula insertion/removal, ECG performance, BMI calculation, following competency assessment.
- Assess clinical condition using tools such as NEWS2, pain assessment tools, non‑verbal signs of deterioration and urgently escalates concerns appropriately.
- Work independently or as part of a team to plan own workload, prioritising patient clinical needs.

Qualifications and Training
- NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification/experience
- Care Certificate
- English & Mathematics at GSCE grade A‑C (9‑4) or level 2 functional skills
Knowledge and Experience
- Previous experience in a care environment or demonstration of caring nature/life experience
- Understanding of strict confidentiality
- Knowledge of complex care needs, including Safeguarding Children & Adults, Domestic Abuse and Mental Health
Specific Skills
- Basic computer/keyboard skills
- Fine motor skills for venepuncture, phlebotomy and other clinical tasks
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to prioritise and organise work
- Record keeping competency in handwritten and electronic records
- Empathy, sensitivity and adaptation of communication style
- Management of stress, in oneself and others, and offer support during distress
- Flexibility, adaptability, reliability and punctuality
- Willingness to undertake new skills and training
- Ability to adapt behaviour to changing and challenging situations
- Healthcare competencies appropriate to area of work
