Overview
West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is looking for a Trainee Accountant to join the Major Programmes team. The role supports the delivery of a professional accounting service across major programmes valued at over £3 bn.
Responsibilities
- Prepare month‑end and annual financial reporting journals and working papers.
- Assist with cash‑flow forecasts for programme expenditure.
- Review and assess project spend and forecasts provided by Local Authority partners.
- Support submission of capital and revenue budgets, ensuring sound assumptions and timely review.
- Manage the grant claim process, ensuring deadlines are met and reimbursements progress promptly.
- Ensure accurate external reimbursements with robust checks and supporting evidence.
- Facilitate delivery of major programmes through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with year‑end statutory audit requests.
- Invest in professional development through training.
Qualifications
- Level 4 AAT or Degree (or equivalent) with a minimum 2:1, ideally in a relevant subject.
- Three GCSEs (A–C) and two A‑Levels (A–C) including Maths and English.
- Proven stakeholder‑management experience.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Strong numeracy skills.
Compensation & Location
Starting salary: £32,601. Salary commences from the lowest advertised point. The role is based at 16 Summer Lane, Birmingham, with at least two days a week in the office.
