Job Overview

The Ophthalmic Technician role within the Royal London Ophthalmology Outpatients Clinic supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred eye care as part of Barts Health NHS Trust.

The clinic provides expertise in clinical care, research and education. The post holder contributes to maintaining these standards through effective clinical and operational support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a range of diagnostic tests, including visual acuity testing, visual field assessment, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and vital signs monitoring.
  • Assist clinicians and nursing staff during patient assessments and treatments.
  • Ensure the smooth and efficient flow of patients through clinic pathways.
  • Accurately collect, record and manage clinical data.
  • Maintain and prepare ophthalmic equipment.
  • Support a safe, clean and well‑organised clinical environment.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient experience, support timely diagnosis and treatment, and uphold the standards and values of Barts Health NHS Trust.

Qualifications and Skills

  • O level/GCSE Education or equivalent.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written, in English.
  • Experience working in an ophthalmic health care setting or related environment, supporting patients and the multidisciplinary team with ophthalmic technical skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks efficiently.
  • Team‑working ability and commitment to providing high standards of care.
