Social Work Assistant (Temporary 12‑week position)
Contract: Temporary (12 weeks) | Salary: FC6 £31,761.26 – £34,914.86 | Hours: 36 hours per week (Monday – Friday) | Location: Queen Margaret Hospital & Victoria Hospital
We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated Social Work Assistant to join the Social Work Hospital Discharge Team (West) on a temporary basis for 12 weeks. The team works with adults who have physical and/or mental health needs, their families and carers, promoting a person‑centred approach to discharge planning. The West team covers Victoria Hospital and Queen Margaret Hospital as well as Fife residents in hospitals such as Lothian and Falkirk.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with social workers, contributing to personal‑outcome focused assessments as part of discharge planning. They will engage with individuals, families and carers to address practical barriers to discharge whilst promoting their rights and strengths to achieve better outcomes.
Key responsibilities and competencies
- Active listening skill, with empathy, clarity, and the ability to communicate effectively.
- Awareness of the assessment process, including risk assessment and risk management.
- Good report‑writing skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a range of professionals.
- Remain calm and professional under pressure, work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in a relevant setting (multidisciplinary working desirable).
- Awareness of person‑centred practice and the ability to empower individuals.
- Creative thinking and excellent problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with service users.
- Travel throughout Fife.
- Good IT skills.
