Job Description:

We are looking for a Caretaker for the Glade Autism School in Totton. The role requires an enthusiastic, reliable, well‑motivated, practical person to attend to the security, safety, cleanliness, ground and general maintenance of the school site.

Responsibilities

  • Small‑scale maintenance and repairs – undertake minor or temporary repairs, decoration and improvements.
  • Cleaning and upkeep – conduct daily cleaning of the school site using appropriate products and equipment to keep the environment clean, tidy and welcoming.
  • Fleet oversight – supervise the fleet of unit cars, perform basic maintenance (tyre, battery and bulb checks) and transport vehicles to local garages for required repair.
  • Work with the maintenance team – log significant or larger‑scale maintenance requests using the internal scheduling system, confirm work to be carried out by the Fair Ways maintenance team.
  • Site security – plan, implement and monitor effective security systems to secure the building each day, act as responsible key holder and facilitate maintenance requests during school holidays as directed by the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Recording and reporting – log and respond to emergent maintenance and/or health and safety issues, alert the Head Teacher, nominated SLT staff and wider maintenance team as needed.
  • Health and safety support – assist the Deputy Head in meeting health and safety requirements, support weekly and monthly checks of lighting, fire alarms and Legionella.
  • Play your part – support a compassionate, resilient and trauma‑informed community that embraces learning, improving lives and outcomes for everyone.

The successful candidate will work 25 hours per week over 45 weeks of the year. A full driving licence and access to a car are required. Enhanced DBS disclosure (the cost of which will be met by Fair Ways) is also required. Fair Ways are unable to provide VISA sponsorship; all applicants must provide evidence of right to work in the UK.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 or equivalent qualification for use of chemicals and cleaning equipment (must be passed on day one in post if not already obtained).
  • Working knowledge and understanding of health and safety considerations and the legislation surrounding them.
  • Practical skills to undertake general building maintenance, minor repairs and porterage duties.
  • Ability to maintain records, information and data as appropriate.
