Job Overview
Assisting Consultant and Nursing staff in performing diagnostic procedures such as transperineal biopsy, transurethral laser ablation, Botox injection, stent removal and dilatation, diathermy, flexible cystoscopy, and biopsy collection. Supporting clinical duties including urinalysis, uroflowmetry, bladder scanning, and preparation of equipment and environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in diagnostic procedures and ensure safe collection and transport of biopsies pre‑ and post‑procedure.
- Set up environment, assist with equipment, and maintain patient positioning for safety and comfort.
- Conduct urinalysis, uroflowmetry, bladder scans and blood glucose monitoring as directed.
- Order unit‑specific equipment and supplies.
- Provide patient toileting support, manage incontinence, and promote continence.
- Prepare and serve food and drinks, and assist with feeding when necessary.
- Prevent pressure sore development and assist with manual handling in accordance with patient plans.
- Obtain specimens for ward or laboratory testing and remove cannulae, catheters, nasogastric tubes.
- Dress non‑complex wounds in line with competency and care plans.
- Prepare patients for treatments, investigations, and procedures, offering support and answering questions.
- Collect blood products from the laboratory as requested.
- Chaperone and escort patients within the clinical department, hospital, and other facilities.
- Conduct general and clinical observations, recording vitals, oxygen saturation, peak flow, and reporting any untoward events.
- Assist with venepuncture, basic life support, and prolonged resuscitation support as required.
- Contribute to the development of “Essence of Care” and benchmark practices.
- Respect patients’ customs, values, and spiritual beliefs in all interactions.
- Promote effective communication within the multidisciplinary team and manage aggressive or abusive behaviour.
- Maintain clean environment and handle disposal of clinical waste and sharps per Trust policy.
- Take responsibility for patient property and dissipate incidents appropriately.
- Support new and junior staff and undertake clerical duties, including reception, telephone, basic computer tasks, case note retrieval, filing, and messenger duties.
- Monitor stock levels of stationary, ward provisions, and linen; complete requisition forms.
- Cover duties of absent colleagues and adhere to all Trust and Unit policies.
Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated caring nature with a commitment to high‑quality care in a fast‑paced environment.
- Willingness and capability to undertake NVQ Level 3; experience at NVQ Level 2 in a hospital setting.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build effective interpersonal relationships.
- Basic computer literacy and supportiveness towards colleagues and patients.
Additional Requirements
- Age 18 or over on commencement of post.
- Flexible working arrangements may include reduced hours, compressed hours, fixed shifts, time back in lieu and home working, subject to service needs.
