Job Description

Senior Software Engineer – Belfast (Hybrid)

Location: The Innovation Center, Catalyst, Queens Rd, Belfast BT3 9DT, United Kingdom.

Responsibilities

• Own the design and delivery of Platform features end‑to‑end: the shared services and payments capability other squads build on.
• Show strong design judgement on ambiguous problems, and know when a simple solution beats a clever one.
• Mentor other engineers and raise the quality bar in reviews and design discussions.
• Help shape our move off Heroku and the architecture of what replaces it.

Qualifications

• You have experience creating products with Ruby.
• You have strong experience of software development.
• You’re comfortable across the backend stack your squad owns: API layer, database, infrastructure.
• You have a product mindset: you’re comfortable critiquing designs and understanding user journeys to help land on the best solution, not just implementing what’s handed to you.
• You enjoy mentoring and levelling up the engineers around you.

This role requires hands‑on Ruby on Rails experience, given its focus on our core backend architecture and payments systems.

Technology

• Ruby on Rails to write our API layer.
• Postgres for our database layer.
• Stripe to power payments: membership fees, club shop and fundraising all run through it.
• Currently our infrastructure is on Heroku, but we’ll be moving off this soon; join us and help shape where.
• React Native for our mobile applications.
• We’re moving to React for our web front end, but we’re currently using Rails with Turbo, Hotwire and Stimulus.

Level & Career Progression

We’re hiring at IC3 (Senior Engineer) on our engineering career ladder. Scope: a squad. You’ll handle ambiguous, open‑ended technical problems and be a technical anchor for the team.
