Lead Engineer – P&C

With plans for SP Energy Networks to invest over £5bn in transmission projects across central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Strategic Project team will support SPEN to deliver the transmission network needed to support UK and Scottish Government 2030 targets. The Lead Engineer (P&C) will oversee the Engineering Design function for Protection and Control equipment in Strategic Projects, manage design and engineering outputs, and ensure innovative designs meet requirements.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Engineering Design Delivery for Protection and Control with accountability for establishing EPC design strategy and processes to ensure a consistent approach to consenting and detail design.
- Develop pre‑contract design, leading the technical aspects of Protection and Control design works (specification, control, automation, telecommunications).
- Serve as key technical interface with Strategic Agreement Framework EPC and OEM contractors; accountable for design deliverables, assurances, and a standardized approach across the portfolio.
- Provide technical support to Project Development and Delivery teams on design and operation of Protection and Control equipment and ancillaries.
- Support concept designs to a level of maturity for detail design progression.
- Assess EPC contractor engineering documentation for feasibility, compliance, and review design, construction, and commissioning to ensure timely delivery.
- Lead engineering reviews, governance, assurance, and approval for EPC design calculations, models, reports, and submissions.
- Identify and support industry‑leading or innovative solutions to reduce whole‑life carbon and promote sustainability.
- De‑risk delivery by inputting early design with EPC contractors regarding constructability.
- Ensure all substation designs and equipment comply with current policies, standards, and operational requirements.
- Lead on strategic technical initiatives (e.g., BIM, digital substation solutions) from contractors and across the industry.
- Facilitate cross‑discipline transfer of expertise with fellow engineers and section heads; act as a key link with other engineering experts and departments.
- Represent SPT Strategic engineering position and interests at senior industry, regulatory, and public consultations.
- Deliver new and advanced engineering solutions to accelerate delivery of Strategic Projects HND and ASTI projects.
Qualifications and Experience
- Engineering qualification (BSc/BEng) and/or postgraduate qualification (MBA, MEng, MSc) or relevant experience; Chartered Engineer preferred.
- Proven experience/expert knowledge in design of Protection and Control equipment and associated ancillaries at voltages 33kV to 400kV.
- Experience in engineering EPC environments of multiple large strategic projects.
- Experience developing detailed design of substation protection and control systems, including drawings, settings calculations, and IED configuration files.
- Proven knowledge of Protection, Substation, Network Control, Automation, Telecommunications, and Metering, including digital substations.
- Knowledge of Transmission Operator Networks health and safety and technical requirements and compliance.
- Ability to implement, apply, and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practices in a design environment.
- Ability to manage under pressure, prioritize tasks in a fast‑paced environment, and maintain a diverse and demanding workload.
- Ability to operate in environments of uncertainty and incomplete information, making well‑reasoned decisions; lead by example and drive transformational change.
- Excellent presentation skills and persuasive influence to drive decisions through engineering analysis.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
