Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Principal Lighting Engineer to lead the design, delivery and management of street lighting and public realm projects across Leicester. The role involves managing budgets, overseeing contractor performance and procurement, ensuring compliance with standards, mentoring a team of four staff, and, when required, taking overall responsibility for the depot, operations team and support staff in the absence of the Public Lighting Manager. The Engineer will deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable lighting infrastructure that supports the Council’s objectives on public safety, carbon reduction, and asset management, while maintaining service reliability and reducing long‑term operational costs.

What You Will Be Doing

The ideal candidate will:

  • Lead the technical oversight of street lighting and public realm projects.
  • Attend project meetings with council colleagues, contractors and suppliers, reviewing project status, managing risks and ensuring delivery aligns with budget and programme objectives.
  • Manage project budgets, procurement and contractor performance.
  • Mentor and manage a team of four staff.
  • Oversee the maintenance and performance of lighting assets to improve reliability and reduce operational costs.
  • Ensure all schemes meet national standards and support smart technology adoption.

What You Will Need

  • ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma (critical for this role).
  • Experience designing and delivering public lighting schemes for residential areas, traffic routes, subways, underpasses, passive safe, high masts, tunnels, flood lighting and architectural lighting.
  • Broad knowledge of public lighting and experience overseeing work.
