Position Summary

The Business Development (BD) team is part of the global Marketing & Business Development Department, supporting revenue generating and profile-raising efforts of the firm. The BD team is specifically charged with firmwide oversight of key efforts to support those two priorities, including campaign development, client targeting, content strategy, event development, and pitches, and works alongside the Communications team with regards to raising brand awareness.

The Senior BD Manager for Energy & Natural Resources (ENR) will report to the Global Senior Director of Business Development – Practice and Industry Groups and will play a trusted leadership role in supporting and advancing all aspects of the BD team.

This position will collaborate closely with the co-chairs of the ENR Industry Group, as well as other parts of the Marketing & Business Development Department. The position will also oversee a number of verticals within the BD team in order to stay close to the work accomplished on the front lines.

The role will be based in London, but collaborating closely with colleagues globally, especially the U.S. A holistic approach to developing business across the international network is a crucial element of the role.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic BD leadership for the ENR group, directing the development, prioritization, and execution of business development initiatives that support the firm’s growth objectives and strategic priorities.
  • Identify market opportunities relevant to our competitive position, and leverage this information into actionable strategies that drive growth and strengthen client relationships.
  • Develop impactful thought leadership materials and campaigns, in collaboration with practice group leaders and relevant Marketing experts.
  • Oversee relevant pitch and RFP processes, working with BD teams globally to improve win rates, refine messaging, and ensure consistent quality of submissions.
  • Lead cross-functional business development initiatives, identifying opportunities for collaboration, driving alignment among stakeholders, and advancing strategic growth objectives.
  • Direct pipeline management and client targeting efforts, using CRM and experience management systems to track opportunities, measure conversion rates, and report on business development ROI to firm leadership.
  • Oversee the execution of key business development programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives, efficient resource utilization, and consistent delivery of high-quality outcomes across the global function.
  • Evaluate competing business development priorities and advise on resource allocation, organizational effectiveness, and strategic investments to maximize the impact of the function and support the firm’s growth objectives.
  • Champion the adoption and effective use of business development technology platforms (including AI tools, CRM systems, experience management databases, and data visualization tools), ensuring the team levers data and analytics to inform strategy and maximize impact.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of BD professionals, establishing clear priorities, promoting accountability, allocating resources effectively, and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Occasional travel for meetings and events as required.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or JD beneficial.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of marketing and business development experience, preferably in the legal or professional services industry. Minimum of 5 years’ proven direct line management experience, including across international locations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Energy & Natural Resources commercial landscape is not a prerequisite but will be looked upon favourably.
  • Experience working collaboratively and effectively as part of a global team within a matrix-structured organization.
  • Skills: Ability to develop strong relationships with leadership members as well as other influential partners, and maintain a high level of interaction and engagement.
  • Excellent level of strategic and commercial awareness, with a proactive mindset to help our lawyers spot and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Commercial understanding of law firm business drivers and how to create opportunities to grow revenue.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, delivered effectively with tact and diplomacy, and exacting attention to detail in all work products.
  • Informed and appropriate judgment, in conjunction with a high level of professionalism, upholding the Firm’s culture and values and protecting and enhancing the firm’s reputation.
  • Proactive, entrepreneurial and able to operate effectively with limited supervision.
  • Adept at collaborating in virtual teams and across different time zones.
