About The Role

We are recruiting for a Senior Policy and Strategy Officer to work in the corporate centre of the Council. You will focus on supporting strategic policy development and performance management across the Council. The role involves consistent business planning and will play a lead role in developing, delivering and monitoring Our Council Plan and its related performance framework. You will maintain a comprehensive awareness and understanding of legislation and policy, identify, analyse and assess proposals from government and partners, and develop robust and informed options for implementation. The postholder will integrate research, consultation and customer insight into decision‑making, while contributing to partnership intelligence networks. The role also includes leading projects and providing written briefings and advice to senior leaders. In addition, you will promote equality, diversity and inclusion and support action on climate change.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • The ability to lead the engendering of a consistent approach to business planning and performance management across all work areas through use of corporate management systems e.g. Ideagen.
  • A good ability to work in partnership and build relationships with colleagues and external partners, including the necessary communication and negotiation skills to develop effective collaborative working.
  • A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of current policy issues relating to local, regional and national government including the implications of national policy for local government and the role of cities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of performance management, reporting and national performance frameworks relating to local government.
  • Ability to analyse written information, numerical data and basic statistics and to draw and present valid conclusions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the sensitivities of working with elected Councillors in a political environment.
