Main purpose of the role

  • Plan, direct and govern one or more complex or large projects in the Data and Finance portfolio, ensuring extensive upfront planning, agile risk management and rigorous governance to provide quality outcomes, timelines adherence and detailed cost requirements.
  • Scope each project and plan individual delivery upfront, covering non‑IT projects such as new procedures, redesign of business processes, organizational change management, regulatory impact assessments, as well as IT projects including application enhancements, database creation or system migration.
  • Manage un‑resourced roles in line with published rules and timelines, minimizing escalation except for valid exceptions such as re‑prioritization of critical skill sets.
  • Engage all project stakeholders and influence business decisions to realise better project benefits.
  • Agree on and implement effective project governance using the guidelines in the project delivery framework, ensuring escalation to the Data and Finance portfolio committee.
  • Create the baseline plan and scope, overseeing adherence to agreed scope, timeline and budget; re‑plan and raise change controls without breaching approved limits.
  • Provide change management expertise to resolve conflict, mitigate change risk and advise the business on related decisions.
  • Structure the project plan with meaningful milestones, provide transparent progress updates, and deliver executive summaries to Central PMO for executive reporting.
  • Confirm project viability through resources and budget confirmation.
  • Mentor junior PMs and ensure team contribution through regular quality data updates related to projects.
  • Support the portfolio/program manager in delivering portfolio strategy and reporting.
  • Collaborate with key functional or business stakeholders to achieve clear outcomes and deliverables.
  • Generate accurate, concise point‑in‑time reporting from golden source tools such as the General Ledger and PPM.

Key responsibilities

  • Full lifecycle project management, ensuring projects are compliant with minimum quality standards defined in the project delivery policy/process/procedures. This includes data capture, currentness, accuracy, and responsibility from initiation through handover.
  • Regular and proactive use of reporting provided by Central PMO; maintain regular meetings with staff delivering the portfolio.
  • Conduct regular catch‑ups with peers/risk control owners in other departments vested in quality project delivery, using golden source data to submit updates to executive committees.
  • Run and manage steering committees and working groups, ensuring accountability of actions against timelines and responsible stakeholders.
  • Support the Data and Finance portfolio and program manager.
  • Identify and resolve issues and concerns swiftly and accurately, following agreed policy, procedures and service needs.
  • Carry out analysis and form clear recommendations and proposals on projects based on sound business rationale, influencing senior management.
  • Define and track delivery of project outcomes and benefits to justify business case decisions.
  • Engage, contract and manage third‑party vendors within procurement and vendor management policies.
  • Recruit project delivery staff of appropriate caliber from internal teams and assign responsibilities.
  • Show awareness of all sub‑portfolios within investment portfolios to identify synergies and avoid duplication.
  • Operate autonomously, align projects with long‑term business objectives and enhance organisational values through benefit realisation.
  • Develop risk mitigation strategies before blockers occur; evaluate and improve processes to boost overall project management efficiency.
  • Manage and mentor junior PMs, promoting team contribution toward seamless governance.
  • Ensure project delivery steering committees and working groups remain in governance, meeting quorum, reviewing Terms of Reference, and escalating RAID items appropriately and on time.
  • Approve baseline management, change, mitigating actions, go‑live and closure, lessons learned, and business case approvals.

Work experience

Essential

  • Proven track record delivering projects to financial institutions within time and budget.

Preferred

  • Strong knowledge of banking regulations and running regulatory projects.
  • Good understanding of financial products and front‑to‑back processes.
  • Demonstrable track record of managing multiple stakeholders and building relationships across diverse skill sets and across the organization.
  • Experience working with and negotiating contracts for vendors and consultants.
  • Coaching, mentoring and leadership skills.
  • Expertise in delivering through full project lifecycle SDLC/PDLC using waterfall and agile approaches.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Proven experience managing budgets.

Skills and experience

Functional / Technical Competencies – Essential

  • Experience in project management in the banking sector.
  • Experience managing Finance and Data Transformation Projects, Regulatory Projects.
  • Financial cost categorisation (capital vs expense).
  • Large and complex project management including change control of scope, budget, plan or benefits.
  • Project baseline control and management.
  • Delivering projects from prioritisation to closure.
  • Lessons learned and post‑implementation review delivery.
  • Change risk management.
  • Familiarity with key controls (SOX, project delivery standards, third‑party risk management, operational resilience, data protection).

Education / Qualifications – Preferred

  • Relevant qualifications/accreditations – Prince2 or equivalent, MPP or equivalent, JIRA.
