Summary

The Business Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for driving revenue growth across McBurney Transport Group by securing new business, developing strategic client relationships, and expanding existing accounts within the transport, logistics, and supply chain sectors. The role focuses on identifying opportunities in haulage, warehousing, and integrated logistics solutions, ensuring commercial success while maintaining operational feasibility and service quality.

Key Responsibilities

New Business Development

  • Identify, target, and secure new customers across key sectors (e.g. retail, FMCG, manufacturing, ports, customs/logistics).
  • Build and manage a robust sales pipeline aligned to company growth targets.
  • Lead tender submissions, pricing proposals, and contract negotiations.
  • Generate leads through networking, industry engagement, and proactive outreach.

Account Management & Growth

  • Develop strong relationships with existing customers to maximise retention and growth.
  • Identify upselling and cross-selling opportunities (e.g. warehousing, customs, specialist transport).
  • Conduct regular business reviews with key accounts.
  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and service delivery.

Commercial & Pricing Strategy

  • Work closely with operations and finance to develop competitive and profitable pricing models.
  • Understand market trends, competitor activity, and customer requirements to shape proposals.
  • Ensure all deals meet agreed margin and commercial criteria.

Market & Sector Development

  • Monitor market trends (e.g. driver shortages, fuel costs, supply chain shifts, Brexit-related customs demand).
  • Identify strategic opportunities in key regions (e.g. UK-Ireland routes, mainland UK distribution).
  • Support the development of new service offerings.

Internal Collaboration

  • Liaise closely with transport planning, operations, and compliance teams to ensure delivery capability.
  • Ensure smooth onboarding of new customers and contracts.
  • Provide accurate forecasts and reports on sales activity and performance.

Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure all commercial activities align with company policies, legal requirements, and industry standards.
  • Maintain awareness of transport regulations (e.g. driver hours, Working Time Directive implications on pricing/service).

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • New business revenue secured
  • Gross margin achieved on new contracts
  • Pipeline value and conversion rate
  • Customer retention and growth within existing accounts
  • Activity levels (meetings, proposals, tenders)
  • Proven experience in a Business Development or Sales role within transport, logistics, or haulage.
  • Strong understanding of UK & Ireland freight markets.
  • Demonstrable success in winning and retaining commercial contracts.
  • Experience of tendering and pricing logistics solutions.
  • Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Experience in temperature-controlled, groupage, container, or customs services.
  • Knowledge of UK–Ireland transport lanes and border processes.
  • Existing network within relevant sectors.
