Overview
The Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine will work across three sites: the Royal Blackburn Emergency Department (ED), the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Burnley General Hospital and the Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington Acorn Centre. You will join a 20‑person consultant team on an 18‑week rota that includes 7 on‑call shifts and covers ED, Resuscitation and the two UTCs.
Key Duties
- Lead clinical care in the ED, including reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all emergencies.
- Act as Trauma or Resuscitation Team Leader during major incidents.
- Provide onward referral of patients to appropriate specialties.
- Supervise, teach and support trainees, students and other staff in the ED and UTCs.
- Ensure timely assessment and safety of patients, maintaining departmental flow.
- Serve as Educational Supervisor during SPA time; undertake educational, research and governance lead roles as required.
- Contribute to departmental governance, audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide clinical leadership and specialist emergency medicine expertise across all sites.
Clinical Rotation
The rota is split between 7 DCC PA and 3 SPA PA duties, with dedicated administrative time for DCC. Consultants also complete Clinical Educator shifts and shop‑floor supervision during these periods.
Location
Primary site: Royal Blackburn Hospital, with additional duties at Burnley General Hospital and Accrington.
Essential Criteria
- MB ChB (or equivalent) and Full GMC registration.
- FRCEM, CESR or CCT, or eligibility for entry into the specialist register.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Emergency Medicine with broad exposure.
- ATLS, ALS and APLS/EPLS provider qualifications.
- Ability to teach interactively in small groups.
- Evidence of UK professional registration and residence within 10miles/30minutes of Royal Blackburn or Burnley General Hospital.
Desirable Criteria
- Minimum 3 years post‑fellowship experience and demonstrated teaching experience.
- Special interest in areas such as USS and RSI skills.
- Evidence of publication, training the trainers, or management training.
- Experience in clinical audit, audit participation and Breaking Bad News training.
- Computer literacy and effective communication across senior, junior and non‑medical colleagues.
- Team‑working skills and ability to obtain value from resources.
