Specialty Doctor in General Surgery

Job Summary

The successful candidate will work at Registrar level, supporting junior trainee colleagues and providing on‑call surgical cover day and night. They will assist with ward running, theatre sessions, outpatient clinics, admissions and discharges under consultant supervision, and conduct morning ward rounds. The role offers opportunities to develop in General Surgery and acquire advanced surgical procedures. This is a fixed term 6‑month post from 31/03/2026 to 06/10/2026.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day ward running, assisting and performing surgeries and outpatient clinics.
• Arrange admissions, discharges and conduct morning ward rounds.
• Accept and manage surgical emergencies and provide independent surgical decisions under supervision.
• Participate in middle‑grade full‑shift surgical rota.
• Engage in departmental audits, teaching and educational activities.
• Lead and develop MDT sessions and support trainees.
• Adapt to departmental changes and pursue further training in special interests.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

• Essential: MBBS or equivalent, MRCS or equivalent recognised by GMC, ATLS, IELTS level 7.0 overall.
• Desirable: Higher Degree (MSc, MD).

Experience and Knowledge

• Experience in General Surgery.
• Able to plan and develop the service.
• Willingness to lead and participate in a multi‑disciplinary team.
• Ability to organise and prioritise clinical needs and know when to consult senior advice.
• Sound clinical judgement and appropriate knowledge base.

Academic Achievements

• Use research outcomes in clinical practice.
• Conduct clinical audit/QI and use evidence base to support decision making.
• Involvement in research projects and publications (desirable).
• Evidence of interest and experience in teaching (desirable).

• Good communication skills.
• Computer literate.
• Establish good working relations with patients, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues.
• Motivated, trustworthy and well organised.
• Energy and enthusiasm; able to work under pressure.
• Experience in teaching junior medical staff.
