Apprentice Gas Engineer – Building Services Engineering (Plumbing and Heating)

Compensation & Hours
- Age 16–18: £8.00 per hour — 40 hours per week (including college)
- Age 19–20: £11.06 per hour — 42.5 hours per week (including college)
- Age 21+: £12.71 per hour — 42.5 hours per week (including college)
Training & Employment Start
You will join Mears Group in the week commencing 03/08/2026, with apprenticeship course starting 21/09/2026. Programme duration is approximately 48 months.
Course Content
- Health and safety legislation, codes of practice and safe working practices.
- Selection, planning, installation, testing, commissioning and de‑commissioning of plumbing systems.
- Service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair techniques on cold water, hot water, central heating, above ground drainage and rainwater systems.
- Installation and testing techniques for electrical components and control systems on plumbing and domestic heating systems.
- Principles of domestic mechanical environmental technology systems.
- Fuel combustion, ventilation and flue arrangements within a domestic environment.
- High‑quality customer service and establishing the needs of others (colleagues, customers, stakeholders).
- Respect for the working environment including customer properties.
- Communication methods and adapting communication style for different situations.
Responsibilities
- Assist with installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems.
- Diagnose and resolve faults.
- Provide customers with product and service information to aid understanding of appliance operation and energy usage.
- Adhere to health and safety legislation and codes of practice.
- Support learning of technical knowledge and safety procedures.
Qualifications & Requirements
- GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 or above.
- Must live within the MK postcode area and be able to travel to the college provider and branch when required.
- Genuine desire to learn and develop strong technical knowledge.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain positive customer and client relationships.
- Complete basic maths and English assessment as part of the selection process.
