Data Centre Infrastructure Apprentice

We design, build and operate industry‑leading bank account‑based payment systems. Our technology powers the UK’s real‑time payments, settlements and direct debit systems, as well as networks of over 55,000 ATMs. We process over 90 percent of salaries, more than 70 percent of household bills and almost all state benefits. As a Data Centre Infrastructure Apprentice you will work in world‑class data centres that run critical national infrastructure for the UK finance industry. You will work alongside Data Centre Infrastructure Engineers to ensure IT equipment and cabling is installed and maintained to allow critical services to run reliably.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Cabling Installation and decommissioning: Installing new racks and cabling systems (copper Cat‑6 and multimode fibre optic) according to specifications and industry standards. Decommissioning redundant cabling systems and racks.
  • Cable Management: Ensuring proper cable routing, organization, and termination to maintain a tidy and efficient data centre environment.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: Identifying and resolving issues with cabling infrastructure, including network connectivity problems.
  • Testing and Documentation: Conducting tests to ensure the quality and functionality of cabling systems and maintaining accurate documentation of the cabling infrastructure.
  • Equipment Installation and decommissioning: Assisting with the installation and configuration of network equipment, including servers, switches, and other hardware. Decommissioning equipment when it is no longer in use.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Monitoring the physical environment of the data centre, including temperature, airflow and power. Working with the Data Centre Engineering department to report issues and find solutions.
  • Collaboration: Working with other Data Centre Engineers, contractors and Network Engineers to ensure the smooth operation of the data centre.
  • Following Procedures: Adhering to safety regulations, industry standards and company‑specific procedures.

Learning Skills and Qualifications

  • Technical Knowledge: No prior experience required, but studies in engineering or structured data cabling are desirable. A desire to develop a successful career within Data Centre Infrastructure Engineering is most important.
  • Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to assess and evaluate issues to diagnose and resolve problems related to cabling and network connectivity.
  • Physical Dexterity: Comfortable with hand and power tools, manual handling, working at height and long periods on feet in confined spaces.
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in cable installation, record updating and testing.
  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication with team members, project teams and data centre staff.
  • Safety Awareness: Prioritise safety, attend health and safety training courses as required.
  • Training: Willing to attend industry training courses throughout the apprenticeship and thereafter (structured cabling, health and safety, electrical safety, confined spaces, etc.).
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook and ability to learn other company software applications.
  • General Attributes: Punctual and reliable, works effectively independently and with others, flexible can‑do attitude, focused on delivering objectives, self‑motivated with excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Travel: For Debden (Essex) and Dunstable (Bedfordshire) based roles, willing to travel regularly between sites and must have own means of transportation.
