The position is a bank role on the NHS Professionals staffing platform, fully based at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. It offers flexible scheduling and the opportunity to work within a highly specialized critical care environment.
Responsibilities
- Caring for critically ill patients in a highly complex environment.
- Providing a high standard of individualised care to patients and their families in accordance with policies and available resources.
- Maintaining high standards of nursing care and ensuring nursing objectives are achieved using a systematic approach.
- Assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating individualised, patient-centred care, and providing support and advice to other staff as appropriate.
- Receiving patients and their relatives in accordance with recognised policies and informing them of treatment and progress.
- Arranging the care of patients’ belongings in accordance with unit policies.
- Liaising with all members of the multi‑professional team to ensure treatments are carried out correctly as per policy.
- Giving and receiving regular reports on patients’ progress and escalating any changes in condition to the senior qualified nurse or medical staff.
- Maintaining accurate records of observations, treatment and care.
- Participating in the checking and administration of prescribed drugs (including controlled drugs) in line with trust policy.
- Informing the sister/charge nurse of any incidents or problems affecting patients, staff, relatives or visitors.
- Informing senior charge nurse of any complaint received verbally from patients or relatives.
- Adhering to the NMC Code of Conduct and trust policies and procedures.
- Being familiar with current files, resuscitation, major incident/fire and child protection procedures.
- Acting as a positive role model and demonstrating sound clinical judgement.
- Co‑ordinating the transfer of patients to other departments within the trust.
- Maintaining good liaison with other nursing units and hospital departments.
- Ensuring all medical equipment is functional, reporting faults and arranging replacement as necessary.
- Actively contributing ideas for enhancing patient care using evidence‑based practice.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse with an active NMC pin.
- Formal qualification in ITU (UK courses only).
- Minimum of 6 months of experience as a Registered Nurse in an NHS hospital within the past 2 years.
- Experience working in an Intensive Care Unit within the past 2 years.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
