Role Overview

As a Specialist Scientific Lead in Tissue Dissection & Sampling, you will work closely with Advanced BMSs, Reporting BMSs, Section Lead BMSs, the Cellular Pathology Laboratory Manager, Deputy Head BMS and the clinical team to deliver high‑quality service within available resources.

Responsibilities

  • Support the dissection team, assisting Consultant Histopathologists with specimen dissection.
  • Teach, train and supervise Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff in the dissection area.
  • Provide specialised technical assistance required by Pathologists, ensuring BMS and BMA staff deliver the support.
  • Undertake macroscopic description, dissection and block sampling of specimens within normal limits, covering RCPath categories A, B, C, D & E.
  • Train and perform advanced dissection of category D & E specimens using specialist knowledge.
  • Work independently, referring to the Consultant Histopathologist as required.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist registered with the HCPC.
  • Relevant higher degree (e.g. MSc in Pathological Sciences).
  • IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histopathological Dissection.
  • IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Dissection (required).
  • Demonstrated experience in tissue dissection and sampling.
  • Capacity to train and supervise junior staff.
  • Provide immunisation and vaccination report from current UK occupational health provider or GP.
