The Opportunity
As a Tax Investigations Manager, you’ll take ownership of a varied caseload of HMRC enquiries, compliance checks, and tax disputes, guiding clients through every stage of the investigation process. You’ll be the trusted adviser, developing effective strategies, negotiating with HMRC, and delivering practical solutions that achieve the best possible outcomes.
You’ll also play a key role in mentoring junior colleagues and helping to shape the continued success of a growing specialist team.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Managing a portfolio of HMRC enquiries, investigations, and compliance checks from initial notification through to resolution.
- Acting as the primary point of contact for clients, providing expert advice and reassurance throughout the investigation process.
- Reviewing financial records, tax returns, and supporting documentation to identify risks and opportunities.
- Developing investigation strategies and advising on tax compliance and risk management.
- Preparing technical reports, disclosure submissions, correspondence, and settlement proposals.
- Negotiating directly with HMRC officers to achieve favourable outcomes for clients.
- Supporting voluntary disclosures and complex tax settlements.
- Mentoring and supporting junior team members, sharing technical expertise and best practice.
- Ensuring all cases are managed efficiently, deadlines are met, and exceptional client service is delivered.
About You
We’re looking for someone who can combine strong technical expertise with excellent client management skills.
You’ll ideally have:
- Significant experience managing HMRC enquiries, tax investigations, compliance reviews, or tax disputes.
- A strong understanding of UK tax legislation and HMRC processes.
- The ability to manage complex cases confidently and independently.
- Excellent analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- A professional qualification such as ATT, CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent.
- The ability to prioritise multiple cases in a fast‑paced environment.
Experience working within HMRC or handling HMRC investigations in practice would be a distinct advantage, but it’s not essential.
What’s in It for You?
- £60,000 – £85,000 salary (depending on experience).
- Flexible remote working with occasional travel to London.
- Exposure to a wide range of complex and high-profile tax investigations.
- A genuine opportunity to influence and grow within an ambitious team.
- Ongoing professional development and clear career progression.
- A collaborative, supportive, and people-focused working environment.
