Summary
Plant Support Engineers are required to look after the day‑to‑day maintenance activities of an engineering manufacturing business. In this role staff are required to carry out a key number of tasks and activities as described. Flexible working is a major factor in this role, as plant support engineers have to cover early starts and other work patterns to suit the business. There is also a requirement to participate in a call‑out rota for site emergencies. There are also a number of individual tasks that are included and mentioned in the employee’s annual appraisal – these could be regular items or in some cases a one‑off requirement.
What You’ll Do
- Keeping production managers informed of maintenance activities and job progress.
- Checking and calibration of key production and metrology equipment to satisfy internal and external audits.
- Undertake minor improvements and project work relating to site services.
- Minor electrical and compressed air installations depending on skills base.
- Carry out building maintenance activities as required.
- Moving and installing small items of plant in production areas.
- Routine servicing work.
- Organising and planning larger maintenance tasks that require method statements and risk assessments.
- Responding to emergency breakdowns.
- Updating certificates and legislative documentation records.
- Daily monitoring tasks relating to site services and critical plant.
- Routine inspections and testing as part of general site walk‑around.
- Updating repair details & parts records on the computer maintenance system. Keeping asset lists up to date and controlling Line Replacement Units.
- Repair to production equipment, fixing faults and investigations relating to machine failures.
- Keeping a level of tidiness and house‑keeping in maintenance workshop and maintenance work areas around site.
- Following health and safety, environmental and other engineering standards that apply to the maintenance of plant and equipment site‑wide.
- Obtaining and stock management of specialist components and spares relating to business‑critical plant.
- Working to a defined budget.
- Support and daily control of external contractors. This includes checking method statements and risk assessments. Raising work permits to control these activities.
What You’ll Bring
- GCSEs in subjects such as maths, science, English and design and technology.
- An understanding of engineering drawings and principles.
- Good practical and technical skills.
- An awareness of health & safety legislation.
- Experience in a maintenance role with other organisations.
- Must be a good team player, able to work unsupervised and on own initiative, calm and ordered in a crisis.
