POS : Physical Education Instructor

Overview

The role is for a Prison Officer with specialist Physical Education Instructor training. The officer will supervise and support prisoners in a secure setting, ensuring high standard services, security and control, and will act as a supervising officer where required.

Responsibilities

• Initiate, develop and deliver physical education programmes and activities for prisoners.
• Customise programmes for individual prisoners as appropriate.
• Deliver gym inductions including health and safety and equipment usage.
• Deliver pre‑planned accredited education activities and manual handling training in line with OFSTED guidelines.
• Interview and allocate prisoners onto courses.
• Carry out initial risk and health assessments, liaise with healthcare and support rehabilitation of sports injuries.
• Regularly review Individual Learning Plans, set and monitor targets.
• Maintain regular contact with awarding bodies regarding courses and certification.
• Identify opportunities to manage prisoners’ participation in external activities, events and award schemes.
• Act as an internal verifier for internal courses.
• Provide fitness training for staff and contribute to well‑being days.
• Conduct regular equipment checks and maintain logs; order new equipment and ensure repairs are completed.
• Supervise, manage and control prisoners decently, lawfully, safely and securely while carrying out all activities.
• Exercise the powers of a Constable, conduct searches on prisoners, staff and visitors, and undertake external escorts.
• Act as the “first on scene” for incident response.
• Maintain and update systems in line with local agreements.
• Prepare relevant documentation for managers for verification and quality checking.
• Attend and contribute to relevant meetings as required.
• Complete and update the Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan.
• Establish, develop and maintain professional relationships with prisoners and staff.
• Understand and comply with national/local policies and legislation.
• Act as a Supervising Officer in specialised roles as designated (e.g. Category A Escorts, PEI).

Working Conditions

• Standard contract: 39‑hour week (37 hours plus 2 additional committed hours).
• Unsocial hours work (outside 07:00‑19:00 Monday to Friday) with a 20% payment.
• Hybrid working arrangements may be discussed where business need allows.
• All work must be based in the UK.

Qualifications

• Competent in custodial procedures, including dynamic risk assessments.
• Successful completion of POELT and probation period.
• Released Physical Education Instruction qualification or, where successful on interview, completion of the qualification and a fitness test.
• Trained in restraint techniques.
• Pass a fitness test.
• Must have a substantive DBS Standard check.
• Proficient in English; Welsh may be required where specified.
• Must be able to comply with security and identity checks before taking up the post.
• External candidates are subject to a 6‑month probation period.
