Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced Plaster Technician to provide casting services in our Outpatient Department and Wards across the Trust. The role demands a proactive and compassionate approach, prioritising both technical expertise and patient well‑being.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive clinical skills including assessments, treatment implementation and review.
  • Provide advice, products and appliances to patients independently, in accordance with professional training and scope of practice.
  • Apply and remove technical and specialist plastering, splinting and bracing under the prescribing clinician’s instructions, seeking advice from clinical staff when appropriate.
  • Assist the service manager in running the plaster room.
  • Maintain and prepare specialist equipment, monitor and manage stock to reduce waste and increase financial efficiency.
  • Ensure a consistent level of patient care, remain informed about patient health and support health‑care education.
  • Provide education on casting and splintage, and offer thorough after‑care guidance, addressing patient concerns in person or via telephone.
  • Participate in product evaluation, comparing costs, functionality and fitness for purpose to ensure best practices and treatment protocols.
  • Support the development and implementation of new and improved service policies and procedures within the scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in performing a range of full casts using plaster of Paris and synthetic materials.
  • Fit appliances such as wrist braces, knee braces and specialist walker boots.
  • Maintain specialist knowledge in orthopaedic outpatient clinics, rheumatology clinics, diabetic foot services and casting techniques.
  • Assist the Departmental Manager with providing clinical and professional advice, expertise and support, and monitoring performance.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients.
  • Record skin assessments before and after casting, and escalates concerns to the registered nurse if required.
  • Maintain clear and accurate patient records and documentation.
  • Communicate electronically and verbally with multidisciplinary team members to ensure effective coordination.
  • Undertake safe manual handling for clinical interventions and exert moderate physical effort for periods.

Qualifications & Experience

  • BOA Casting Certificate (or expectation to complete upon appointment if not held).
  • Member of British Orthopaedic Association and/or Association of Orthopaedic Technicians.
  • Maintains a professional portfolio.
  • Previous study of anatomy and physiology.
  • Evidence of recent clinical skills and competency, and proficiency in a variety of casting materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in fitting wrist braces, knee braces and specialist walker boots.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and work under pressure.
  • Effective written, verbal and electronic communication skills in English.
  • Capacity to undertake safe manual handling for clinical interventions and moderate physical effort.
  • Completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service check and compliance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
