Electrical Technician

Position overview: Responsible for technical fault finding, diagnosis, repair, acceptance testing, and calibration across a wide range of engineering plant and equipment, including electrical distribution, lighting, fire detection, building control, automation, standby generator plant, security access control, nurse call systems, lifts, and medical electrical systems such as IPS. Undertakes maintenance, repairs, minor improvements and capital work following Trust safety standards.

Main duties

  • Work in accordance with electrical HTMs, statutory regulations, IET Wiring Regulations, and Trust policies.
  • Carry out all work safely following risk assessment procedures.
  • Work overtime for emergency repairs as required.
  • Perform essential repair works and general maintenance activities at management request.
  • Conduct planned preventive maintenance inspections and commissioning tests per Trust procedures.
  • Use cause‑and‑effect analysis and detailed examination for fault finding on complex systems.
  • Act as Authorised Person (AP) for LV/HV electrical systems and lifts.
  • Provide service lead role for AP areas, including planning, scheduling maintenance activities and major interruptions.
  • Attend training courses to maintain competency.
  • Follow detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and regulations.
  • Use relevant tools and equipment within safety guidelines.

Qualifications (Person Specification)

  • Completion of a structured training programme in electrical engineering for at least three years.
  • HNC/HND/BTEC/ONC in electrical and electronic engineering plus relevant professional experience.
  • 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations Certificate.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
  • Health & Safety awareness training.
  • LV Authorised Person (training provided).
  • HV Authorised Person (training provided).
  • Emergency first aid training.
  • Experience with specialist medical electrical systems such as IPS.
  • Inspection and testing of generators.
  • Inspection and testing of fire alarm systems.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Minimum three years of structured training in electrical engineering.
  • At least one year of post‑qualification experience in electrical maintenance.
  • Good awareness of health & safety legislation and safe systems of work.
  • Experience working in an acute hospital environment.
  • Experience working on Building Management Systems.

Salary

£32,073 to £39,043 per annum, pro‑rata.

The role is principally based at either Basingstoke or Winchester site, with possible work at other sites.
