Palliative Care Specialist Nurse

An exciting opportunity has arisen for permanent Band 7 Specialist Palliative Care Nurse, 30 hpw (0.8 WTE) to join the Palliative Care Hospital Liaison Team as part of the Palliative Care Service in Northumbria Healthcare Trust. The post will be Trust wide covering Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH) in Cramlington and Wansbeck General Hospital, Ashington and may at times have to cover into another area of Northumbria. The team supports medical and nursing staff in caring for palliative patients with complex needs in an acute hospital setting.
Main duties of the job
- Provide expert specialist palliative care for patients and carers with life‑limiting illnesses within the hospital settings.
- Develop partnerships with members of the Multidisciplinary Team in the Trust to provide a seamless service of palliative care, enabling patients to be maintained in an environment of their choice.
- Provide clinical professional support, resources and education to members of the Multidisciplinary Team when necessary.
- Work as an autonomous practitioner within a multidisciplinary environment, ensuring adherence to professional codes of conduct.
- Work with other professionals to promote and develop the ethos of Palliative Care within the Trust and the local community.
Job responsibilities
The post holder must be able to demonstrate that they can work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team and possess excellent leadership and communication skills. They will manage people with complex life‑limiting illnesses within hospital settings and work in partnership to enable patients to be cared for in their preferred place of choice. Substantial palliative care experience would be an advantage.
Qualifications
- NMC Registered Nurse
- Diploma/Degree level of study
- Registered Mentor
- Teaching qualification or equivalent
- Supplementary prescribing qualification
- Diploma in Palliative/Cancer Care
Experience
- Symptom management
- Relevant experience in Palliative/Cancer Care
- Advanced communication training
- Clinical Skills training
- Experience of working in both community and hospital settings
