This post combines both inpatient level 1 Specialist Neurorehabilitation and outpatient Specialist Rehabilitation services. The post holder will ideally have skills in managing complex level 1 inpatients with ABI/SCI and peripheral neuropathy, as well as experience in complex spasticity management within a tertiary centre (Intrathecal Baclofen, focal spasticity management – botulinum toxin/diagnostic nerve block and phenol neurolysis).
The successful candidate will provide consultant supervision for the bed-based neurorehabilitation unit at Queen Mary’s Hospital, and support our portfolio of rehabilitation services. The post holder will work closely with Dr Sancho Wong (Consultant in Neurorehabilitation), Dr Catherine Dalton (Consultant Neurologist and spasticity lead); Dr Christopher Symeon (Consultant in Neuropsychiatry), Dr Penelope Talelli (Consultant Neurologist), Dr Ana Miorelli (Consultant in Neuropsychiatry), Dr Lawrence Hayes (Consultant in Neurorehabilitation) and Dr Vijay Kolli (Consultant in Amputee Rehabilitation).
Main duties of the job
Our service has inpatient beds both at St George’s Hospital Tooting, and Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton. This post will be primarily based at Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton. The service includes 50 inpatient beds (Neurorehabilitation, RAAR and Amputee Rehabilitation) on two sites, outpatient vocational rehabilitation following brain injury, a day case cognitive assessment programme and a comprehensive spasticity service. The latter provides nine outpatient botulinumtoxin injection clinics a week, joint Surgical MDT Pathway, community spasticity outreach service and an Intrathecal Baclofen Pump service.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To lead on management of 8 Level 1 inpatient neurorehabilitation beds in St George’s Hospital. To provide management of additional patients to support annual leave of consultants.
- To contribute into multidisciplinary clinics (Physiotherapist and Consultant or Specialist Registrar) in spasticity.
- To share a prominent role in tackling the business and management issues that arise in running the unit.
- To undertake supervising and teaching Specialist registrars/Higher trainees in Rehabilitation Medicine and resident doctors.
- To provide formal Undergraduate Educational Activities for medical students on Neuro rehabilitation placement, as part of the “NeuroPlus” module within Neuroscience rotation.
- To be committed to undertake and support audit and the tenets of clinical governance at the trust.
- To be flexible in his/her service development to best suit the evolution of the district and tertiary service to cope with the changing demands of providing modern neurorehabilitation care.
- To be engaged in continuing professional development, annual appraisal, and revalidation processes.
Person specification
Qualifications and Training
- Medical Degree (e.g. MB BChir)
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCST or equivalent or within 3 months of CCT in rehabilitation medicine
- Full GMC registration
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register
- Higher Degree (MD or PhD)
Experience
- Ability to take full and independent clinical responsibility
- Experience in supervising junior medical staff and coordinating clinical activities
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
- Experience to manage as an independent practitioner in spasticity management including botulinum toxin injection/ITB/Diagnostic nerve blockade/Pneol neurolysis.
- Experience in neurology and neurological rehabilitation
- Evidence of recent papers presented at national and international meetings
- Evidence of recent peer reviewed publications
