Role Overview

We are recruiting a Senior Dosimetrist (Band7) to join the Worcester Oncology Centre team. The role involves rotating between the Planning and Mould Room areas and supporting the full (CT and Linac) equipment replacement programme planned for 2026, including the installation of SGRT.

Location: Worcester Oncology Centre, Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Worcester, UK. The centre is purpose‑built on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital site and offers modern facilities in a supportive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist technical expertise in Treatment Planning and Mould Room and analyse solutions to complex, non‑standard situations.
  • Discuss complex aspects of patient treatment with clinicians and radiographers and technically interpret information related to VMAT, treatment planning and mould room procedures.
  • Organise work scheduling in Treatment Planning and Mould Room, adapting schedules several times within the working day to respond to unpredictable urgent requests from consultant medical staff.
  • Lead the activities of a specified area of the treatment planning or mould room service, following direction of the Lead Dosimetrist or Head of Radiotherapy Physics, and support clinical development projects.
  • Plan and prioritise own workload, organise projects and manage time to meet targets; adapt schedules as required.
  • Determine and process patient outlining, including complex outlines for dose prediction, and produce predictions for treatment planning using computer‑aided design software.
  • Calculate complex dose‑delivery settings for treatment machines.
  • Maintain records of all outlining, treatment planning, and calculations.
  • Take impressions from patients for the production of individualized immobilisation and shielding devices, including complex impressions.
  • Explain technical aspects of impressions, immobilisation and treatment to patients, ensuring their cooperation even if distressed or confused.
  • Manufacture fixation devices, blocking devices and build‑up materials for patient treatment, including complex devices, using fine‑precision tools.
  • Carry out quality‑control checks on highly complex radiotherapy equipment following agreed protocols.
  • Ensure that quality‑control checks which directly affect patient radiation dose are performed with strict reference to safety tolerance levels set out in the quality system.
  • Provide supervision to trainees, help them achieve training goals, and deliver training to small groups of staff and students.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Radiotherapy Quality System.
  • Design and develop spreadsheets and databases for use in radiotherapy physics management.
  • Participate in service development initiatives initiated by the Radiotherapy team.
  • Minimise financial costs through safe and effective use of high‑capital equipment.
  • Work unsocial hours as necessary and participate in rota coverage for weekend emergency on‑call treatments and around bank holidays.
  • Cover colleagues during absence, peak workload and deputise for the Lead Dosimetrist when required.
  • Undertake any other duties required by the Head of Radiotherapy Physics in accordance with the role.

Professional Requirements

  • Maintain HPCP or RCT registration as a clinical technologist.
  • Be a core member of a relevant professional organisation (e.g., IPEM) and maintain ongoing CPD.
  • Stay current with developments in Radiotherapy and treatment planning, immobilisation and delineation.
  • Maintain familiarity with current developments in radiotherapy, including various imaging modalities.
  • Exercise autonomy responsibly when dealing with specialist issues, guided by professional principles and Trust occupational policies.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in radiotherapy treatment planning and ability to create and optimise simple and complex treatment plans for a range of clinical sites.
  • Expertise in delineation of organs‑at‑risk for radiotherapy planning and extensive experience with IMRT/VMAT.
  • Extensive experience in manufacture of immobilisation devices and lead/cerrobend products.
  • Specialist knowledge of IMRT/VMAT, mould room and treatment planning principles.
  • Knowledge of dose‑measurement principles and linac quality control.
  • Ability to plan and organise own workload, including patient appointments, planning clinics and QC schedules.
  • Ability to supervise trainees and manage workload of the treatment planning and mould room teams.
  • Effective communication of technical information verbally and in written reports.
  • Skill in communicating complex information to distressed or terminally ill patients and carers, and achieving cooperation from children and confused adults during impressions and immobilisation fitting.
  • Competence with basic computer operation and analysis of data by creating or modifying spreadsheets.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with the Raystation treatment planning system.
  • Experience preparing and delivering presentations using PowerPoint or equivalent.
  • Vocational degree in Therapy Radiography.
  • IPEM Diploma in Clinical Technology or equivalent.
  • Membership of the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists or State Registered Radiographer (HCPC).
