Medical Laboratory Assistant – Specimen Reception
We are looking for Medical Laboratory Assistants to join our Specimen Reception team in the Blood Sciences Pathology Department at Ipswich Hospital. This is a fixed‑term secondment, full‑time (37.5 hours per week) role based in our pathology laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Collect, label and process pathology samples for pre‑analytics.
- Enter sample data into the laboratory information system.
- Identify and report mislabelled or misplaced specimens, unsuitable samples, or process failures.
- Assist with stock control and usage management.
- Work a variety of shifts over a 24‑hour period, including evenings, weekends and nights.
- Support technical staff to maintain a safe and effective service.
- Participate in cross‑training to extend skill set as needed.
Qualifications
- GCSE Maths and English (A‑C) or equivalent.
- Demonstrable knowledge of routine and non‑routine healthcare science duties equivalent to an NVQ level 3/diploma.
- Practical experience working in a Biomedical Science laboratory.
- Previous NHS experience preferred.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to supervise less experienced staff and demonstrate own work.
