Job Description:

The job holder will work as part of a team providing 24‑hour cover at an Approved Premises (AP), including security and monitoring services. The holder will undertake a full range of work with people on probation whilst resident at the AP, helping to maintain risk management and sentence plan objectives and reporting significant changes in risk or re‑offending. The role is predominantly out of hours, including nights and weekends, and may involve brief visits to other APs during staff absences.

Summary

The post involves supporting residents’ well‑being and supervision, maintaining discipline, and enforcing AP rules, licence conditions, and sentence plan objectives. The holder will contribute to managing residents’ risk, facilitate activities that support rehabilitation, and ensure the safety and security of residents and staff.

Responsibilities, Activities & Duties

  • Contribute to effective team practice, communicating and collaborating with colleagues to ensure consistency of work practices.
  • Communicate key risk issues at handover and throughout the shift, and, when required, liaise with Offender Managers, Stand‑by Manager and partner agencies (Police, Health professionals, drug/alcohol services).
  • Conduct regular inspections of the building, including cellars and grounds, record occurrences or defects, and monitor CCTV equipment.
  • Maintain an active presence in the AP, engaging residents pro‑socially and observing to ensure adherence to their risk management plans and overall well‑being.
  • Manage behaviour of high‑risk residents, motivating compliance and challenging abusive or aggressive behaviour.
  • Observe and report any significant changes in risk or non‑compliance with enforcement procedures.
  • Engage residents in purposeful activities that support sentence plan objectives.
  • Ensure the AP is locked and secure during curfew periods; confirm the presence and well‑being of all residents overnight.
  • Serve as the first/emergency point of contact out of hours, providing accurate information, risk assessment, and escalation to Out of Hours Manager when necessary.
  • Create and maintain a safe working environment for staff, residents and visitors, following Health and Safety legislation and SSOW.
  • Conduct health and safety checks, fire alarm inspections, curfew checks, and room searches as required.
  • Pack up residents’ possessions as directed and facilitate the induction of new residents.
  • Administer medication in line with prescribed procedures and audit medication sheets weekly and nightly.
  • Carry out drug and alcohol tests when deemed necessary by risk assessment.
  • Provide first aid to residents who are injured or self‑harm.
  • Maintain AP records and files, including data entry and completion of incident reports.
  • Carry out safeguarding duties for children and manage visitors and telephone calls, supervising contractor work.
  • Model pro‑social behaviour, reinforcing positive attitudes and challenging anti‑social behaviour.

Experience

Experience of working with a diverse range of people who have experienced a range of social and personal difficulties.

Technical

  • Minimum 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English and Maths), or equivalent qualification, with evidence of high‑level numeracy and literacy skills.
  • IT skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Hours of Work (Unsocial Hours) Allowances

Standard working hours are 37 hours per week, excluding unpaid breaks. Additional payments are made for working unsocial hours.

Working Patterns

  • Annualised hour working pattern – 625 or 1250 hours per year (mix of standard and unsocial hours).
  • Full‑time peripatetic residential worker – travel within the cluster to cover shifts at different AP sites.
  • Full‑time or part‑time residential worker – assigned to a single AP for the shift pattern.

Eligibility

Open to UK nationals, nationals of the Republic of Ireland, Commonwealth citizens with the right to work in the UK, EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein nationals and their settled or pre‑settled family members, other EU nationals with settled or pre‑settled status, limited or indefinite leave to remain, and certain Turkish nationals.

Any successful candidate will undergo security and identity checks prior to starting.
