Pathology Reception Officer – self‑motivated, versatile, team‑player. Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week. Shifts 08:00‑20:00, Monday‑Sunday therefore bank holidays included. Grade Band 2, permanent.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Receive, sort, and process a large volume of clinical samples, resolving issues such as leaking, mislabeling or missing information.
- Enter patient data and investigation requests accurately into the information system for prolonged periods of time.
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, apply SOPs and prioritise work according to urgency.
- Answer telephone enquiries on the pathology enquiry line, provide results and advice within competency limits.
- Coordinate and order supplementary tests, liaise with requesters for any issues.
- Sign for deliveries, maintain supply records, ensure correct storage of samples and stock.
- Use the lab information management system and instrumentation as authorised; report any non‑functional hardware.
- Assist with data collection for audits, support quality management initiatives.
- Adopt health and safety policies, report hazards, participate in incident reporting.
Supervisory and management duties
- Participate in annual and periodic reviews; undertake training as appraisee.
- Assist with competency training of junior staff in cooperation with section trainers.
- Work overtime when competent; book leave and report absences in line with departmental policy.
- Maintain confidentiality and appropriate communication with patients and staff.
Requirements
- Right to work in the UK; no visa sponsorship is provided for this role.
- For Graduate visa holders: minimum 18 months remaining on the visa at the time of application.
- Excellent keyboard skills, accurate data entry, and good telephone manner.
- Strong communication, time‑management, and organisational skills.
- Solid understanding of medical terminology and biomedical investigations.
- Computer‑savvy with IT literacy and experience in NHS preferred.
- Knowledge of data protection, data quality and patient confidentiality.
- Certification for DBS checks.
- Knowledge and compliance with health and safety, COSHH, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
Working hours and benefits
Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week. Working hours 08:00‑20:00 Monday‑Sunday, with extended weekday, weekend and bank holiday rotas. Salary £25,272 per annum pro‑rata.
