Role Overview

As a SevernSide Overnight GP you will manage a wide range of clinical presentations in urgent care settings, support patients via telephone, video or face‑to‑face consultations, prescribe appropriately, maintain thorough documentation, mentor new clinicians, and contribute to peak demand rosters.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and manage the full breadth of clinical presentations and age groups in urgent primary care, including physical and mental health needs.
  • Take telephone referrals from healthcare professionals within the BNSSG area for appropriate adult medical admissions, balancing capacity issues of the hosting acute trust.
  • Communicate effectively with referring HCPs to build positive relationships and facilitate alternative management ideas.
  • Familiarise with other urgent care services in the BNSSG system and access them for patients.
  • Conduct clinical work by telephone or video, consult with patients and/or their representatives, assess concerns, establish differential diagnoses and management plans.
  • Support community management where possible, but recognise serious illness and emergency situations requiring admission or ambulance response.
  • Prescribe appropriately for the urgent primary care context, including initiation and adjustment of end‑of‑life medications.
  • Document key findings clearly, providing detailed notes for continuity of care.
  • Seek clinical advice from senior GP or Clinical Coordinator when required.
  • Buddy new clinicians on their first shift, supporting them to familiarise with systems and processes.
  • Use IT systems safely (CLEO, PACS, EMIS, Clinical Toolkit, BrisDoc weblinks, Remedy).
  • Identify and report concerns and incidents proactively to support learning and improvement.
  • Contribute to sustainability efforts by adopting eco‑friendly practices (reducing paper use, recycling, etc.).

Qualifications & Experience

  • Teaching experience or GP training roles.
  • Familiarity with the BNSSG healthcare system.
  • Acute or general medical experience.
  • Knowledge of EMIS.
  • Current or recent experience in urgent and unscheduled community care.
  • Experience and interest in working across urgent primary care settings.
  • Effective multidisciplinary team working in current or recent primary care or IUC settings.
  • Experience in referral management, primary care and hospital interface decisions.
  • Experience in medical student teaching and GP training/clinical supervision.
