Job Title: SCHOOL CARETAKER / SITE SUPERVISOR

Working Weeks: 52 weeks per year
DBS Required: Yes (enhanced DBS, prohibition check, medical fitness, identity, and right to work checks)

Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean, attractive, safe, secure and welcoming site through regular monitoring of cleaning routines and scheduled/dynamic maintenance of buildings, grounds, fixtures, and fittings.
- Carry out security procedures for the school buildings and grounds, opening and closing duties, and act to prevent trespass and ensure perimeters are secure at all times.
- Ensure unauthorized parking does not occur and act as a keyholder for alarms, police call‑outs and other emergencies outside normal working hours.
- Perform limited cleaning outside school holidays and ensure premises and furnishings are cleaned to school or authority standards, including carrying out regular checks and holiday‑specific tasks with log sheets.
- Audit and order cleaning materials and equipment as required.
- Respond promptly to the school’s Maintenance Reporting System, prioritising health and safety tasks; manage basic tools and equipment; report items needing repair and coordinate with external professional services when necessary.
- Direct contractors to the site, ensuring work meets health and safety standards; inspect contractors’ work and obtain satisfaction notes.
- Operate the heating plant to maintain adequate temperatures and hot water supply, and undertake frost precaution procedures and emergency access in events of fire, flood, or other incidents.
- Ensure play areas and paths are free from litter, animal faeces or remains; inspect drains and gullies regularly and deal with blockages or leaks.
- Maintain a safe, working condition for caretaking and cleaning equipment, organised and stored.
- Use school holidays to deliver maintenance projects such as decorating that cannot be achieved when staff and pupils are on site.
- Preserve planters and flower beds to present a smart, attractive entrance to the school.
- Receive delivery of stock and materials, ensure appropriate storage, and verify stock orders for completeness.
- Prepare after‑school activities spaces, ensuring accommodation for normal school use out of hours, and undertake school lettings according to procedures.
- Be responsible for the well‑being, health and safety of cleaning staff as a qualified First Aider, safely moving equipment and resources in line with manual handling practices.
- Assist the Head or senior staff in risk assessments and health and safety checks, respond to alarm alerts, and apply H&S and COSHH guidelines.
- Maintain COSHH records and undertake CPD relevant to roles and responsibilities, often outside normal working hours.
- Be flexible to daily needs of the school, responding to weather conditions or emergencies outside normal working hours.
Qualifications and Abilities
- Good literacy skills to understand and complete administrative systems, forms, and orders.
- Good numeracy skills to check goods, carry out stock control and calculations.
- Excellent communication skills to explain clearly, listen and respond to concerns or requests.
- Ability to carry out procedures, routines, and follow instructions accurately.
- Proficiency in operating cleaning equipment, machinery, and tools for daily maintenance.
- Knowledge of the layout and organisation of the school and its site.
- Capability to supervise, coordinate, and support cleaning staff.
- Creative problem‑solving and initiative to resolve unexpected problems.
- Ability to solve problems and respond to unforeseen circumstances such as hazards or accidents.
